2>3 flare random

I have a 2 to 3 flare but it is not consistent

it flares ocassionally when hot and cold and throttle position seems to be irelevent

i did k1 spring kit and no change

i did vacuum adjust

i did modulator adjust

i did fluid/filter change

i did bowden cable adjust

nothing gets rid of the random flare

it flares maybe 30 percent of the time with no pattern at all

when it shifts correctly it shifts perfect, smooth crisp

1>2and 3>4 are always perfect

2>3 sometimes perfect other times flare

i ordered the modulator pin when it comes in i will install it and post results if any

any ideas?

getting annoyed

when i changed fluid there was no sludge in the pan and the fluid was red/not burnt

no other issues

Steve

What did you adjust and what is the current vacuum level at idle as measured in the line to the modulator?

gotta check again Brian...i forgot the numbers but when i adjusted the vacuum stuff i remeber it being ok

i will post results

i added a restrictor in the line before the vac valve on the pump to acheive firm but not hard shifting

just cant get rid of the flare

weird that it is random though

Steve

That isn't what you want to reduce the vacuum. A restrictor will reduce vacuum downstream of the orifice when air is flowing.

What you want is to adjust the VCV to provide a much lower vacuum level at idle in a steady state condition.

Here is a thought.

I delt with an identical random 2-3 shift issue several months ago.
While installing the superior shift spring kit, discovered one of the old springs was broken.

3800 miles of perfect shifting so far.

ok so the transmission saga continues

i had been sidetracked with front lower control arm bushings,i installed urethane by the way fairly easy job

back to transmission

the vacuum at idle is 12

if i tried getting it any lower by adjusting the vcv the throttle would begin to bind

so i moved under the car to the modulator

the modulator is the later type with a plastic lever style cap with the tee under it not the rubber cap type

according to research the plastic cap is destroyed when removed but i pried it off carefully, turned the tee 1 and a half turns clockwise and snapped the cap back on

all shifts are smooth at low throttle and with heavy throttle the shifts are nice and crisp but no bang

thanks for your assistance, it is very appreciated

sincerely----Steve 94 s350 w140

Great news.

Glad the modulator adjustment worked for you.

In the future, you really need to update the vehicle in your signature. Throughout this thread, I'm thinking you're referring to the '84 300SD, when, in reality, you were referring to the '94 S350. Although you stated it way at the bottom of the OP, I simply referred to the vehicle list in the signature for the diesel.
