Glow plug conversion kit
I want to convert a 1979 300d to the newer pencil type glow plugs.
I've seen and read about a kit ? whereby you take the older ( inline bridged )injectors and change them over to the pencil type. Has some body done this, what all is involved ? Thanks in advance |

I believe the actual kit with updated relay, etc. is no longer made.

Just to be clear, these are called Glow Plugs. Injectors are entirely different parts.
The Bosch part number is #80035 |

It's not a big deal. Buy 5 of the retrofit glow plugs. Remove the loop plugs and their heavy wires. Leave the ground wire at the front of the engine disconnected. Hook the wire that come from the firewall to the first plug near the firewall to the new pencil plug nearest the firewall, then make jumper wires to connect the rest of the new pencil plugs together. You're done.

Use #10 multi strand wire and the connectors can be found at Raido Shack, or Ace HW. When starting only glow 6-10 seconds, not nearly as long as with the loopers

What the kits used to include.
In the Pic on the left the Kit also had another Realy and Wires for the Relay. While the 1976 year relays don't seem to work with the Adapter Glow Plugs most other years have had good luck using the original Mercedes Stock Relay. The kit on the Right is the Bosch FGK2 and has 4 Glow Plugs and 3 Jumper Wires. Notice that the Kits only come with 4 Glow Plugs. If you want them for a 5 Cylinder you end up making one Jumper Wire and buying another Glow Plug.

Highly recommended upgrade.
no kit necessary just order the glow plugs and fashion the connections from common off the rack components.

I looked into the DIY in Diesel Giant, the instruction shows a single wire is fabricated to connect to the next glow plug. My 1984 300D each individual glow plug has their own wire. can I just get the new version and use the same wire from the old glow plug.

Are you referring to the solid metal resistance wires of the loop system?

You don't need to convert the plugs on an 84 vehicle. It came with pencil plugs from the factory.

Thank you! I guesss I should have taken one out and verify, since it's been in the mid 30's in my area. It sure is hard to start my car in the morning.

Advantage of that system is that if a plug burns out then the others will keep working. You probably have at least one, maybe more, burnt out.
