My 240D Fuel Mileage

First full tank on my 1983 240D manual got 28.7 mpg on winter diesel....mostly around town, some highway. And my driving habits are, shall we say, not exactly conducive to fuel economy. Not bad...I'm pleased.

That's about on par with what mine used to be.

My 1976-4-spd got 33 mpg on local roads (freeway speed up to 70 mph) in high altitude in Montana. After I sold it to Peter Hedary, and he tuned up the engine, he told me it was averaging 36 mpg around Miami, FL

Thats right about where my mileage is. Over the past year I've been averaging 27.9mpg. With a high of 30.7 and a low of 22.5. I don't see much change in mileage with winter diesel versus summer diesel, maybe a mile or two. But I live in a pretty mild climate and winters don't get all that cold, so the winter blend may not be as bad as it is else where.

That's the kind of fuel economy I would expect. When I drove 240D's, 90% or more were highway miles and they did right at the 30MPG mark for the long term. To do that well in town, stop light to stop light would be pretty darn good mileage for one of these cars.

My 300D 2.5 has been getting 33 average mpg on the freeway doing 70-75mph. My cruise control has been wonky so its mostly foot powered. I am hoping that the number improves when I fully fix up the cruise.

My daily commute is ~ 130 miles. Lately I've been doing fill-ups ever 3 days. I wonder if I could stretch it to 4 days. 4 days = 16.5 gallons of fuel... The tank is, what 18? When does the reserve light kick on?

The cruise control guru with a wonky cruise? C'mon, practice what you preach!

Your total capacity is 18.5 gallons....light comes on with about 3 gallons left on my cars identical to yours.

I'm working on it I think its a problem in my speedometer cable. I've been watching it, when my needle is smooth and steady, so is my cruise. When the needle shimmy and shakes...so does the cruise. New cable on the way! Alternator upgrade as well! After that lower sound encapsulation panels go back on!

Just pull out the cables and put some speedo cable lube or graphite on it liberally as you feed them back in. Wouldn't hurt to clean them first.

I think the cable MIGHT have been stretched/damaged a little bit when I dropped the transmission one of the times. I ordered a replacement cable a few days ago from MB.

That's good mileage for a five cylinder.

I always got low 20's around town and seldom broke 30 highway with my 240d's. Stick. With a slushbox it was significantly less.

Yeah, low 20's in town is what I would expect too. That's why I was impressed by the in town figure posted by the OP. On the highway, over the long haul, I got almost exactly 30 on the highway. My trips were often fuel up, interstate until empty and fuel up again.
