Broken Hose ID

85 300TD
This small hose under turbo is broken at the nipple. It goes about 6" and connects to a small metal tube that looks like part of the turbo. Anyone know what it is and its purpose?
Thanks
John

Sounds like your Waste Gate Hose.

Located at the bottom of page

It would help if you had a picture farther back to see the whole area.

Thanks Charlie. It looks like it has been broken off at the nipple for a long time...probably original hose. Any harm to the engine/turbo with it being off so long? How urgent is it that I replace it? It looks to be held on with pinch clamps.

it controls the boost your car produces. I would place that as extremely important.
without it, your car could melt pistons...

Doesnt look like a wastegate hose. Where is the other end attached to? Is that an aftermarket turbo? Can you take a better photo?

Totally stock 85 300TD. Turbo is KKK. The hose attaches to a nipple on the part pictured in photos 1&2. This is on the exhaust manifold under the air cleaner. The hose is maybe 6-8 inches long and goes under the body of the turbo and attaches at the other end to a narrow metal tube about 2 inches long{with nipple} that is in a fitting in the body of the turbocharger. Pretty sure it is the wastegate hose. Looks like somebody used vacumm hose at one time and it melted off. Reading about it on this forum and others; there seems to be confusion on the part # for this hose. Pelican says 000-098-07-83 is the part but one post I read said it was too short and the ID was too large. This number also shows up 000-098-14-83. Anyone want to venture a guess as to which one I should order?
Thanks
John

I didnt recognize your turbo. Its different than mine. You could use the clear braided ones that you find in hardware stores while you wait for the right part.

It looks like it hooks to the waste gate and to the intake manifold. But is not the same as my 85 300 D federal version.

Also where is your intake snorkel? Perhaps you removed it for the photo?

Air cleaner and snorkle removed to access hose and get pictures. The small metal tube in picture 3 goes right into the round body of the turbo next to the snorkle intake. This is a 5/85 production car and is stock. The metal tube into the turbo doesnt appear to have ever been removed. Maybe a late model production change since it is different than yours?

Answer

There where two brands of turbo used by MB.

It is stock.

That is the waste gate hose, and needs to be replaced soonest possible.

After reading quite a few posts on this hose and looking at pictures, I've come to the conclusion that the most common hose part being sold {000-098-07-83} is not correct for this turbo. The parts mock-ups show it to have a larger ID that fits the T3 turbo maybe?? The nipple connections on mine roughly measure about 3/16 ID. I ordered some 5mm ID silicone hose and I'll try this to start. Unfortunately, this hose on mine has probably been melted off for a long time.....hope no damage was done to the engine
Actually, if you look at the pictures of another thread being run right now{T3 compressor housing seal} you can see the much larger fitting on the turbo body of the T3 as compared to the KKK turbo on my engine.

That is interesting that MB used two different turbo set ups on the same year.

With the hose off you are leaking boost at lower speeds then over boosting later.

I would get some hose at ace hardware. Just take yours in and pick one the same ID or a bit tighter. You can always get the "right" tubing material later.

I looked in NAPA yesterday for some silicone hose but they didnt have anything with a small enough ID, so I ordered some online. The original hose was replaced with some rubber vacuum hose at some point and of course it didnt stand up to the heat. It had melted at the nipple attachment. I only noticed it was hanging there when I was cleaning up the engine compartment so it could have been disconnected for quite a while. The overboost situation is what has me concerned....hoping that I didnt harm the engine. I dont drive the car hard routinely but do take it on the highway at 75mph frequently and occasionaly accelerate hard enough to make the trans kickdown. Fingers crossed

most lawnmower/hardware shops have tygon fuel line for chain saws/weedeaters... it would certainly hold up long enough to order the correct hose. likely it'd hold up for years.
