Question Driveline Whine

Hi guys,

I have had a minor driveline whine that I sort have ignored for a year or so. When exactly it started is not clear. As it has gotten colder this year it has (seemingly) been more noticeable, so it's time to investigate.

- whine stay the same in neutral or drive coasting
- whine is there with speed of wheels, whether coasting, accelerating
- it sort of sounds like an electric trolley (like the green line if you know boston)

- put car up on jackstands and listened underneath while assistant rev'd in Drive. Whine does not occur on jackstands
- checked diff fluid level - all is well (replaced 30k ago with Mobil1 75W-90)
- went for a drive and assistant drove so I could listen - sound is coming most prominently from the driveshaft center tunnel. Can't isolate to one side or the other.

This is a tough one - I have fully rebuilt the rear suspension on the vehicle (2 years ago) and I have replaced the center bearing on the driveshaft (3 years ago).

Any thoughts greatly appreciated. My hunch is the center bearing.Sorry for the long post -

dd

From your description I would think center bearing as well. It's probably the cheapest and easiest job out of the list that could be whining. If it doesn't do it on jack stands it could be the both rear wheel bearings as well. To test that you could remove the axels from the hub and tighten the nut on the inside just a tiny bit and then see if the noise changes. If no change in noise than it's not the wheel bearings. If the noise changes then it's likely the bearings.

Thank you for the advice on this one - I'll probably take a stab at it with the center bearing. I hate taking the driveshaft out though - what a pain.

I'll re-check my axle bolts - but unless it's both bearings this seems unlikely, I cannot isolate it to a side.

As long as it's not the diff I can deal with it :-) I dont want to source a 2.88.

On my car, I notice a whirring/whining in park, drive reverse or neutral but I think it is the transmission pump or torque converter I hear. It is not loud but I can hear it outside the car. Since you only hear your noise when driving, it has to be something after the transmission. Carrier bearing is a good start.
