Death of a resurrection - Blown motor

For those of y'all unfamiliar with my 300SDL - http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/324256-raising-dead-300sdl-killed-gasoline.html

Last night I pulled into a friend steep parking lot and scraped bottom a little, didn't think much of it as it wasn't very hard, but it was enough to cringe. I stayed the night, then left for work in the this morning. It was still halfway dark, the started car and drove off. Half mile went up the on ramp, had no power. Checked gauges, no oil pressure Pulled off and parked it as soon as possible, checked oil. Nothing, not even on the stick. Remembered about scraping, checked pan. I remembered seeing when I was working on it that the PO had put sealer over it, but hadn't had any problems with it. I scraped just a the right spot to tear the front edge of the sealant where there was a crack that had dripped over night, with the puddle on the passenger side.

Picked up some JB weld, cleaned the crack, applied, waited, filled with oil, started engine, waited. No leaks but it had picked up a little different rhythm. Decided it was either going to work or it wasn't and left.

About 5 miles later there was a pop/lurch, a cloud white smoke and then nothing. Pulled off highway, knowing it was dead but hoping against hope. Open the hood and found I had knocked a chunk out of the engine block. My guess is sized bearing at 3000rmps.

Towed it, and now it sits in Edinburg. Looking to sell it. I already put more into it than I had.

Sorry to hear that. Your sad tale makes me wonder if one of the added benefits of encapsulation panels is protecting against that kind of damage.

Sorry to hear that. Reminds me of a time I walked to our motorhome parked in the lot up near the abbey, above Whitby, Yorkshire. There was a sharp rock sticking up thru the grass and I saw a fresh scrape on top of it and a trail of oil leading away from it thru the parking lot and out onto the road. That engine must have suffered the same fate as yours unless it had an audible no oil pressure alarm.

I did something similar to my first car, a '73 Chrysler Newport. On the way to a friend's house, I hit a rather high and steep railroad crossing too hard. I didn't think much of it until the engine started knocking on the way home. Turns out I had damaged the oil pan and there was about a half a quart of oil left when the damage became readily apparent. No oil pressure gauge in that car, and the idiot light never came on.

Someone in TX will have a good running engine. Consider periodic engine swaps as maintenance when driving old cars. $300 & a few hrs and you'll be back on the road.

That's good advice.

Hmmm.... If I could snag one for $300 I could work with that. Not having much long term experience with these cars, what the going rate for one in the south?

There could be hope!

Thumbs up moral support

As someone who read your "raising the dead" thread religiously, my response when I saw this was oh no! I hope you are able to re-raise the dead.

I bought an entire 85SD car for $500 + pick up/tow fees off Craigs list with the intention of fixing it. It will probably go for parts because I've been scavenging off it. Many forum members have multiple non-running cars with good engines.

Even a yard should sell engine only for ~$300. They don't pay more than that for the car.

cheap engine donors are out there....

I bought a running 300D (om617) for $500 earlier this year. I'm planning on making it a driver and maybe giving it to my daughter in a few years.

The cheap cars are out there.....just keep your eyes open and check Craigslist often.

Do you have a suitable place to store the car while it waits on an engine???

My local yard charges the same for a 5 or 6 cyl motor. $155+20 for the core and tax.

That's a bummer - after you put so much work into it

A replacement engine will probably be the best solution.

Which local yard might that be? Have you noticed any good palomino 126 interiors?
