I flew 5000 miles to drive a ford.

Landed in the father land this AM and picked up our rental. Had my hopes up for B class but got a pregnant ford focus C Max. Why dont they sell these things in the states??? Diesel, 6 speed, seating for 6. I will probably be repeating the above quite frequently.

Also, it smells like my 16 yr old dog everywhere. They really need to find a better catalyst than urine....

Are you headed to the MB museum? I had a visit and enjoyed it very much. The Porsche museum is also very good and close by too!

just recently went to Italy, and I complained constantly in those words.

I rented a fiat bravo 6-speed turbo diesel (reserved a ford fiesta online, so pleasant surprise to actually get an italian car), my uncle rented an opel astra 6-speed turbo diesel, and my other aunt had rented a B series diesel mercedes.

I loved my fiat rental, felt and sounded just like a TDI with a little lower power curve in a little 1.6 turbo diesel.

Fuel economy on all 3 was astonishing.

I drove a right hand drive 2012 Ford Focus TDCi 6 speed this past summer.

I got 5.6 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers in mixed driving for a few weeks. Not bad of a car I must say. I also wonder why they don't sell them here.

Well, I just read the EPA/Obama administration just enacted new legislation to reduce soot emissions another 20%. So I don't expect any new diesel cars anytime soon. And I wonder if those few still sold here may dissappear as well!

Happy Motoring, Mark

I wish I could find a cartoon I saw once in a trucking magazine when EGR first came out on heavy trucks. The exhaust stacks fed back into the air filters. "now what" was the caption. If only they knew...

EGR valves to reduce NoX, Particulate filters to reduce soot, Urea injection to further reduce NoX.

Actually, the urea injection into the exhaust to reduce NoX allows the manufacturers to reduce the amount of EGR required to meet the stricter emissions. As a bonus, they are able to tune the engines back up a bit and retrieve the previously lost horsepower. The DPF and urea combination has proven to be a much more reliable system than just the DPF.

I don't know about the requirements for cars, but heavy trucks are already 99% soot free and the NoX is way down. The urea does smell like cat pee but the exhaust has no smell. Trucks with a half a million miles still have exhaust stacks with NO soot in them.

Turns out this preggers Focus will fit 7!! I found a hidden middle seat under one of the middle row chairs. Clearly, 4 adults is a squeeze but 3 adults and 3 kids were easy going today.

We went to the MB museum last time, this go around its the BMW museum. It's just mind boggling that this car isn't sold in the states. For the eco conscience soccer mom it'd be perfect.

The C-max is sold in the 'states. It's only available with a hybrid drivetrain here. No diesel, but that would be no surprise.

We need a picture of that Euro Focus. Wreck it and it will be out of Focus.

It sounds like fun. I have been in Europe three times and each time I had a car to travel in. The driving is no problem especially since we use universal signage here now. Taking a tour in a bus just cannot compare.

in 2001 I took my four daughters, Mrs. W and my Mom to Italy for two weeks. we got a renault 9 passenger van with a four cyl turbo diesel and a five speed. It drove like a car, had decent power and got great economy.

Great stuff.

In Italy the Alfa Romeos were the greatest looking cars overall as I remember.

We wuz robbed last time we went to Italy. We were supposed to have something diesel but got stuck with a Lancia something (Eta?) gasser. We picked it up from a small agency in Orvieto that just didn't have much. Crap. Time before we had a very pleasurable Renault Clio3 dci that I would have liked to have taken back to the US.

I hate the C max - for its crappy luggage space sorry!

The S max is so much better for that though I reckon it to be a bit more van-like

...I still can't see the point of a 6 speed manual transmission though - 5th gear in most cars (especially those stupid French ones mentioned above) just seems to make more noise. I spend most of my time trying to remember to shift from 4th to 6th and ignore number 5...
