5 speed automatic transmission that bolts to OM617
I have a 1985 300TD wagon. I spoke with a gentleman who has an 84 and said he put a newer model 5 speed diesel transmission (Automatic) into it and it bolted straight up - anyone have info on this? says he is getting 43mpg.
Thanks, |

Highly doubt either is true. Would take a lot of modification .... 617 would never get 43 mpg

The starter wart from the newer transmissions is on the wrong side for the 61x series. They do bolt to the 60x series

I am getting 34 mpg (consistent over 13 tankfuls) with 10psi of boost @ cruise and the 3.07 axle.

No, I am skeptic about 43, but I do think it is possible.
When I keep my rpm's around 2300-2400, I can get 34 consistently. If I drive at 3000 rpm, my mileage drops to 27 mpg. When I was flying, I found I could lower engine rpm, increase propeller pitch (increase load) and maintain my airspeed and burn less fuel. Dropping rpm's can pay big dividends....

um, have you witnessed the modifications to Dok's vehicle? he has stated he keeps the RPM's below 2500 to achieve this... why must you dispute him Lance?

What is the standard axle ratio in a 1983 300TD?

I've seen a 123 wagon in Seattle with a 722.6 (five speed) hooked up to a 602. I do believe the owner claimed it was getting somewhere near 40mpg. He's a member here.
I don't think I've ever seen more than 28mpg with a 617 engine. |

43 MPG ? Hmmm
I was told that about a car I got and that is just incredibly wishful thinking. I have a 5 speed manual, Getrag 717.400 and even by putting it in neutral as much as possible and coasting where possible, not happening. Also, I removed my PS pump and got rid of that parasitic drag. That got me around 2 MPG. Even when I remove the water pump and vacuum pump and go all electric, I am still trading off with more parasitc drain from the altenator, although the tradeoff is still about 50% in my favor. That will get me around 3-4 more MPG. Once it starts to get hot in S.C., the AC will eat some of that up. There is only so much that can be done to get rid of the parasitic drain on engine power. You can get rid of weight, but that gets tricky and it takes a while since you are only getting rid of 5 pounds here and 10 pounds there. Drop the bumpers and get Euro Bumpers. Get Recaro seats from a W124. Even get sexy and do a CF hood and trunk lid. Even a pound here and there and I highly doubt you would break 3,000 pounds. Even at 2,999 pounds, with a 5 speed manual, coasting, and never exceeding 60 MPH and no mechanical pumps, I doubt you would break 40 MPG. I forgot true Non-Turbo Nozzles with .15 vs .20 pintle and I am still thinking 40 MPG would be optimistic. HOWEVER, even after all of my mumbo jumbo, it may be possible. Maybe the 2.88 rear end ? The key to really improved MPG on top of a well maintained car which is running 100%, is weight reduction and reduction of engine parastic drag and maybe some aerodynamics. That seems to be it. Moving 3,400 pounds of steel with a bunch of pumps will only get so much out of a gallon of diesel even when diesel has the most BTUs of any common fuel. |

wedge that brick, and MAYBE you could see 35... air dam everywhere, and 40... load up with super retracting calipers, maybe even removing the rear calipers. install 4" wide tires, and moon wheels, skirts and a tail...remove the side mirrors, improve the transition from hood to windshield... tilt the windshield, smooth the rear window deck... I bet you could get the 3000 lb car into the 50's... with a 5 speed, and 2.47 diff... I sure a heck would not wanna drive the car...
