1981 Mercedes 240D Air Conditioning Question

Hello all,

In advance I would like to thank you for all the advice and help with my car. I would not own or be able to afford this car if it was not for these forums.

Currently my A/C system does not work at all and the compressor IS good and not seized. I am not converting and will stay with a full R12 system.

Here are my questions:
  • Where can I buy an R12 drier for my car?
  • Where can I buy the expansion valves/o rings for my system?
  • I can find R12 on Ebay, is this decent R12 or should I be looking elsewhere?
  • Will a R12 vacuum/pump on ebay be sufficent to load the old system?
  • Please help!
Thanks again,

Marco

Hi Marco,

To my understanding, you can buy all these items through normal internet channels, including online parts houses (including peachparts). The R12 you can purchase through auction sites, or through Craigslist.

Personally, I took my 83 240D to my local A/C shop. They have all the bits to do leak testing, pressure testing, and recycling of R12, etc. I recommend you do the same.

Thanks,

Packman

Marco,
  • The drier is readily available. I expect that the parts supplier on this forum can provide it.
  • The O-ring set might also be available from them, but one of the online a/c suppliers like aircondition.com or ackits.com will certainly have them.
  • You will be best served with a wet vane pump. It won't know whether its evacuating an R12 system or what. I would not suggest using one of the venturi pumps.
  • R12 on ebay is not usually of low quality, but you will need a 609 certification to legally purchase it. If you don't already have one, you can search EPA 609 or something and find several online sources where you can spend an hour and about $20 to take an open book test for the certification.
Hope this helps.

Yes, there's no difference in the dryer. All it has inside is a screen and dessicate to attract and hold moisture. It doesn't know what refrigerant is being used.

Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for all of the feedback and advice. Here is my gameplan.

1) Replace all O-RING's and gaskets on the A/C system. (parts from mercedes benz, or a local custom rubber shop Main Rubber Supply, my grandfather has gone here for gaskets and drives a 62 diesel benz, never had any issues at all. dealership prices are nuts because they "import parts from germany".

2) Drain the compressor, replace the oil in it.

3) Replace the dryer also

4) Vacuum the entire system for an hour or more, test to see if it can hold vacuum or not and if not replace where it is leaking

5) Fill with R12, oil etc.

The only problem I have right now is finding a proper system to fill the high pressure and low pressure R12. No shops do it, I'm from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

What is my way around finding a machine that can properly fill this system up without coverting to 124A? Please help with this.

Here are some pics of the car, I will be recording pics and videos when I do this, thanks to peachparts

Any further advice or help is greatly appriciated !!
