The main applications for those engines were:

The Engine Family is named 40x, and if there is an A behind the code, like 404A then it's turbocharged.
They were available in V6,8,10 and V12 configuration, and each cylinder has 1.6 Liters of displacement, so for example the V10 should have a 16L displacement.

If i had the money, I would try to shove the V8 into a W116,126 or 140, it's unlikely that it would fit, but if it would be awesome

I think Deutz used them under licence, but they were developed by Mercedes and MAN.

What are these motors rated at horsepower/torque wise?

GM made all sorts of big diesels. I think they even had V16's. That MB is only a baby ! A GM 16V278 is s serious diesel.

I have an 8V71 TT in an old scraper, thats 8 cylinders, twin turbos & a supercharger. Each cylinder is 71 cu inches. They also did a 92 version. Have seen one in a road train truck that was pulling 4 x 40' trailers.

I ran a tug down in your neighborhood for four years at Diego Garcia. She had twin V16 cylinder, 149 jimmys, 149 cubes per cylinder. They were rated at 1600 HP each, really not that much for a tug these days or twenty years ago for that matter. nice engines with very little down time. I haven't seen a "92". There are lots of V8s,12s, and 16s in tugs around here.

The ones I posted the picture of are out of the diesel engine for an electromotive train engine. A grown man can easily stand in the cylinders of these beasts.

I built a Detroit 12V71 (2 stroke) diesel engine for a truck once. 852 CID of 2-stroke diesel pushed that Peterbilt 352 Pacemaker Cabover like it was nothing....
