Manual Shifter Goes into Reverse without Lifting Up

1983 240D manual. Shifter goes into reverse without lifting up. Otherwise shifting is fine. Has anyone ever experienced this? If so, what part of the shifter mechanism needed to be repaired?

Thanks.

I've never experienced it, but I had a gorilla try to force it in reverse without pulling up and screwed it up. It's the only time I ever messed with the shifter, and it was a long time ago, but as I recall there is a pin that was moved out of position by the gorilla.

Is this something that has started occurring on a car that used to work normally, or is it a car that you just acquired that is suffering this problem? The reason I ask is that if it is a newly acquired car, I wonder if the pin is missing or seriously disturbed.

I'm sorry I don't have any more detailed information. I can tell you though, that if you will remove the gearshift knob and peel up and remove the boot where you can see down in there, I feel quite certain, that this will give you access to the area where the problem is located. I really don't think the problem will be underneath the car.

Hope this helps.

the reverse lockout is dependent on a little rubber/steel bushing below the shift handle. These commonly tear, stopping the lock mechanism from really working.
lots of people just live with it.

I grabbed one from a parts car once, not sure the part number. there is probably a nice blowup on the EPC

I have the same problem with my 240. A couple times I accidentally put it in reverse before the light turned green. I now know that if it grinds a bit, it is in reverse, not 1st. I have a spare shifter assembly, I think I might look at it closely to see exactly what part needs to be replaced....Rich

It's a car I recently acquired.

Apparently the part that needs to be replaced is the shifting tube, part no. 123 260 18 82. But, for $290 plus labor, I think I'll pass.

I found it for $220.50 doing a bunch of searching.

Why not find another good used shifter?
