Going to go look at a 190D

Mercedes 190 diesel
Gonna call for more information but this car is in the area as we are in Florida with my Grandmother and my dad has been very interested in getting a 190D. Apparently the tranny is gone so I would like information on the cost of a replacement. Not sure what tranny is in there but I guess I shall find out. Also does anyone have any ideas on what I need to look for in this model? Well really info you can give I would be willing to take. What should I offer to this guy? I will pay in cash so I should have some leverage.

It seems like the torque converter is the only problem outlined in the ad, any estimates on the cost to replace?

He doesn't even mention mileage or what year it is? That is not a leather interior.

There have been a few posts here lately asking "what to look for" in a 190. Use the search function on top. Other sites to check are benzworld dot org and 190rev dot net.

the ad says he replaced tranny/tc, not that the tc is bad... he says the tranny "blew up" I wonder what that means...
sounds like he paid 5K for the car, then spent 5K in sundries... and regrets it. also the front tire in the pic is flat...

Some people think a car is worth what they paid, as well as what they put into it. The facts are that cars have set values which are easily determined through NADA, KBB, and online searches. Cars that dont physically run or drive should be bought as parts cars, and valued accordingly.

Having said that, the most expensive components would be the engine and transmission. If the engine runs well, and the rest of the car appears to in decent condition, you could value the car by age and mileage and deduct the cost of a transmission. On a 190 that about turns it into salvage value.

The last 190d I bought had new paint and low mileage but with a blown transmission I paid 800.00 as is where is. Common problem with this model and not likely to be cheap to fix.

What a small world!

Haha, I grew up about 15 miles from that town (I lived in Newberry) and my parents still live in the area. Judging from knowing the area and from the picture don't expect too much- it looks like the boonies! I can tell you the car is either a 86, 87 or possibly an 88 model from the lack of any body cladding and the "newer" center console and steering wheel update. My brother had a 190d turbo for about 10 years and while they are very economical and zippy cars to get around in I (much less himself) would never buy another one again. Just too much things constantly breaking on them, un-trusty AC systems etc... While it wouldn't hurt to take a look at it don't buy unless you can get a good deal on it. Seeing how you would have to tow it back to Atlanta (I'm presume) it may be more work than it's worth. Also, he says new tires but they look worn (and a flat one as previously mentioned above) unless that's an old picture. Could be a good parts car if the price it right.

FWIW, I would stick with the W123's. There was actually an '85 Wagon listed for sale in Newberry (near high springs) earlier in the month. The ad must've expired but it looked nice!

Guy says its an 87 2.5 NA, still waiting on more info but I agree DieselClan, you have to be very weary when purchasing anything in this area, which I have known because I am down here all of the time. Some of the stuff isn't worth being called junk and some of it can be rather good.

Gonna go see the car and a 1985 300D that the guy owns tomorrow, sounds like the car has been well maintained but we shall see.

See previous 190D posts

Expect to spend the same $2300 on a trans that he did. I consider that the car in it's present state is overpriced by a factor or 2 or more. A wise man once told me there is nothing so expensive as a cheap Mercedes. Cheers Dan

I have found a rebuilt tranny for $1500 and can get rather cheap labor or might even be able to attempt it myself with the help of our mechanic. Again we shall be wary.

Keep a $4000 price tag in your head ,then take what you can go out and buy with good service records in a 190d .Come back to this car with an open mind of what your final price will be with everything fixed ,this can be a lot easier on your pocket book if you just start with a car that has been well taken cared for from the start.A 300k motor is not a good place to start .Open your market to a 300d in the 87 -93 vintage ,with $4000 and a few months of looking is much better than sitting waiting for a mechanic to fix a non drivable car.Im sure you can find 10 possible cars in this time ,look at three that are closer to your liking ,then make a deal on that one that is the best all around deal.
