super smoky om601

Looked at a w201 190D 2.2 last night that has crazy smoke coming from the exhaust, like it smoked up the whole block in about 5 minutes. Supposedly it started after an oil change. Is it worth buying? Its got a 5 speed and a clean body. Anybody know how difficult it would be to rebuild a 601? Thanks guys

Whats the blowby like ?Im sure its build pressure is pushing oil from the oil breather tube for reburn across the recapture lines at the exhaust header. If its getting past one or more of the pistons it could be some very gummed up rings .An Oil change would have zero effect on oil being burned by the car .A compression test is your only friend in this case ,get these numbers first before considering purchasing ,then youll have no questions what the motors telling you, it will be fact not fiction.I also drive a 190d 2.2 ,it was having some smoke , on warp turtle speed on takeoff it was noticable but not heavy ,Im putting 4 oz of marvel M oil in the crankcase and has helped considerable.

There was very little blowby, and the engine ran smooth once started, except for an occasional knocking coming from the front of the engine which leads me to think maybe something vacuum pump related. Also, I think I could pronably get it for about $1k, which is at least a thousand less than I have seen any other diesel w201's going for anywhere near here, and since the car was really clean and didn't have any other problems it makes it really tempting. I'm not really concerned if I have to go through the engine pretty extensively or not, I have an engine lift, a stand, and plenty of tools

One more thing, it didn't want to start, as if all of the plugs were bad

Was the smoke white? If so it looks like the engine is not burning the fuel properly. Burnt out glow plugs can explain this if the car only smokes when cold. If upon reaching the operating temp the smoke is still there, I would say the IP timing is late, perhaps because of a stretched chain.
This is relatively easy to fix, so if the compression is good and no other problems are evident, I would go for it.

The fact that anyone would let any car get so run down that it smokes up the whole neighborhood and then tries to say its because of an oil change tells me that the car was badly maintained by morons. I would not consider such a purchase, and believe me I've bought cars just like that so I know what I'm talking about.... dont pay more than you would if the engine compartment was empty.

My 601 won't make any smoke even when started at 20F or if I am flooring it....its always clean. There's something very wrong with that engine. I'd consider the engine toast and price the car accordingly. The manual trans and body (if very nice) are worth swapping in a replacement engine.
