Windshield concerns

So I am looking at the new acquisition (2 months ownership) 300 tdt and I notice *green* in the lower windshield corners. Like..algae? hrrmm
Poke the inside of the gasket with my finger and it is dry and inelastic, like hard foam.
It's been raining a lot lately and I've noticed fogging in those corners, as well.
The windshield itself is a replacement (safetylite? or summat), seems to be in good condition with the exception of one fairly clean looking chip.
The plan:
I have purchased a OEM Gasket 123-670-01-39 (151$) from the local dealer.
(also inquired as to the price of an OEM windshield (123-671-02-10) was quoted 660. (Can anyone tell me what "shot colored foil" is, anyway?))
I will take OEM gasket to local glass guy have him pull the 'shield, replace the gasket, and reuse the windshield (get the chip patched, too).
Here's where I get worried. What if there's rust in there? The rest of the car is basically rust free. Wire brush and POR 15?
Anybody got suggestions?

Edit: quick update- it appears to be leaking between the rubber and the glass. I'm tempted just to seal it with Butyl.

Depends on how much of the steel lip the seal sits on is rusted away. If it's so far gone that you can see rust bubbles under the edge of the seal, you may end up having to weld in some new metal. If not, there's a chance you might get away with the POR15 idea.

BTW you might want to take a look at your rear window seals and rear hatch window seal...you may not like what you find there, either. You also won't like what the rear hatch window seal costs...

PO seems to have replaced that hatch window seal.. it's flexible and looks newish. I see no signs of rust back there.

When I removed My Rear window I could see rust under the Rubber on the Bottom. Once I removed the Windshield I fond that the Rust turned into a hole when I removed the Rust.

In My own case I would remove and re-install the Windshield Myself. Of course there is always a chance it could break coming out or in; that even happens once in a while to people who replace Glass as a business.

Someone had replaced the Windshield on My Car as I found the Windshield is made in Mexico.
The rear Window is evidengly a Junk Yard replacment. When I removed it I found that the Heater Grid Connections were gone and the was a lot of busted Glass from the previously broken Rear Window under the back deck.

This question is for anyone: When a Glass Shop changes a Windshield Gasket and they break the Glass who pays for the new Glass.

There should be some Windshield info below:

Around here, whoever owns the glass when the installer arrives owns it if it breaks. ie They break their glass they replace and install.

They break your glass, you buy one from them and they install.

I have a lifetime glass in my 85SD. The 84 needs a windshield. Cost of new windshield with me negotiating is ~$200. My insurance agent gave me a name of a glass place that supposedly gives a discount to insurance companies. I'll post back with particulars.
