Need Help. NSS and going from auto to manual trans
Howdy,
ALMOST done the swap from T Walgaumuth's old car and its 5 speed with 300D NA drivetrain into JayBob's 240D body which had an auto. My old car never had rear back up lights and no swith or wiring to the 5 speed shifter. VSTECH has been working late night on the odds and ends left over from the last Saturday marathon session. Here is VSTECH's question: QUESTION -- What does one wire to by-pass the neutral safety switch or whatever wires that are necessary for the 5 speed to work and bypass the neutral SS ? VSTECH asked me to post this question since I think this is the last little burger before I can just drive the car home and tackles a bunch of issues, but at least I have a lift to get under the car. Any help ??? |

I wouldn't want to give bad info, I could speak off the cuff about the w124 NSS.
If it's similar, let me know.

I guess what he's looking for is either what to hook it up to or what to bypass. |

C146 is the auto transmission NSS connector.
According to the ETM, there are 4 pins. Pin 1 - blk/yel/red - +12 V from F14 for reverse light supply, this is double tapped at C146 with a blk/red to the kick down switch. Obviously you will not be needing this any more. Pin 2 - gry/yel - to reverse bulbs, this goes through the big C104 under the dash that carries all the trunk wiring. Pin 3 - vio/wht - from terminal 50 on key switch (pos III) Pin 4 - two vio - thinner one to GP relay, thicker one to pilot terminal on starter. Remember when you start you have to hit the starter solenoid as well as the GP relay. How does a manual turn on its reverse lights? At the transmission or is it part of the shifter? The ETM shows a jumper on 3 and 4 for the start interlock and a switch for reverse lights but is vague on the details.

Hi JayBob,
THANKS for the resonse. B4 I forget, PLEASE remind VSTCH and Me to NOT forget our glovebox door. I am hoping to get my car this upcoming week. Just a super short list of things to wrap up. I never had any back up lights in my old car. There is supposed to be a wire hook up at the shifter. A 2 prong deal. The PO never installed one. I need to get a donor at the yard from a 240D manual. HOWEVER, for now, I just need to bypass the NSS until I find one. After the drivetrain swap, VSTECH and myself found a multitude of problems and issues which need attention. However, at this point, just trying to get the old girl driving and on the road. ANY info is super appreciated. Thanks again ! |

I bet John has a M/T reverse light switch somewhere in his stash.
You will not need the NSS, it just jumps out on a M/T according to the ETM. Maybe there is some sort of adapter harness that plugs into C146, that passes 1 and 2 up to the reverse light switch and jumps 3 and 4 for the start circuit. I wonder if an ac compressor shut down micro switch from the valve cover of a 617 could be adapted for the reverse light switch if you can't locate the real thing.

Use the wire color code to locate the below connector:
Above the accelerator pedal is a 4-wire plug with a harness that runs down to under the accelerator pedal and to the transmission tunnel. Unplug it, jumper across the two purple wires in the female plug and try to start again. The member who gave the above info did not say what colored stripes the Pruple wires had on them but jumpering them bypasses the Neutral Safety Switch and you will start in any gear. The other 2 wires on the Connector i presume are for the Back Up Lights.

I think when I had my 240D MT, there were no NSS to prevent the car from starting when in gear. My memory may be off though.

I was going off the ETM But it's kind of vague. I'm just speculating since I have never seen a M/T 123, but what D911 said, makes sense to me on how it would be logical to arrange it. The main vehicle harness has a plug above the accelerator. A sub harness, used only for A/T, picks up from there, and goes to the NSS and kick down. For M/T a different sub harness would be used for the shifter reverse light switch, with the NSS jumped out in the plug.
If that is the case it ought to be plug and play if you have the proper M/T switch and harness. I don't know for sure but given the other examples of the way these cars are wired it makes sense to me that it would be set up like this for ease of assembly.

I swapped in a 4-spd into our 85 300D. the wiring was very simple. there is a reverse switch on the 4-spd manual shifter that has a wire with a plug.
The NSS has 4 wires, 2 for start and 2 for the reverse lights. the wires come through a grommet to the right of the fuel feed peddle, and connect to the plug connection at the top of the carpet panel to the right of the drivers knee. Remove this plug and discard the NSS assy. The wire from the manual shifter reverse switch now plugs into this plug above the carpet panel. Looking at my notes when I did the swap, the 240 reverse plug with the back cover off... the side with the alignment pin hole will be black/yellow stripe and grey/yellow stripe. The other 2 pins will be purple/white stripe and a purple wire. these 2 purple pins will have a wire soldered to connect them. These two soldered connected pins do the same function as the NSS did when it was in the start position. I don`t have a 5-spd shifter to look at, but the reverse shift switch should be the same. Hope I wasn`t confusing in my description. The NSS grommet, I degreased it, reinserted it and filled the hole with RTV. Charlie
