glow plug issues?

since it has gotten cold, I change about a glow plug a month. always a different one, is this normal? seems like I am changing them too often. I use the Bosch duotherm.

Thanks

That does seem like way too often to me. I've had the same pencil-style glow plugs for years.

How long do you keep them on before you start the car? I've heard that you're not supposed to let them run for more than 10 seconds. If it's cold out, the idea is to do it multiple times, not leave them on longer? If you replaced the loop style GPs with pencil-type, the relay may not be shutting them off correctly...

Have you replaced them any of them more than once? If not, maybe they were just nearing the end of their life and now you're using them more harshly in the lower temperatures... Perhaps once they're all replaced everything will be fine.

I guess that's the big question - have you replaced any of them twice yet? I wouldn't really be worried until new plugs were failing at that rate. Otherwise it could just be coincidence.

"My diesel fleet!"
Was it all on the same Car? If it was on the same Car is it one that has the Pencil Glow Plugs or the Filiment/Loop type Glow Plugs?
What make of Glow Plugs are you using?

Either type can be killed by worn out Injector Nozzles, low Injector opening pressures or very late Fuel Injection Timing.

Not reaming or otherwise cleaning out the Carbon is also bad for them.

I'm going to make a wild guess that it's Bosch Duotherm.:D

As long as you haven't replaced one that you recently changed then I'm guessing that each plug is burning out normally, and that they all just happen to be burning out at nearly the same time. If you've burned one out that you just replaced then it's time to investigate further.

That's incredibly unlikely.

HUH? He said he is using Bosch Duotherm, why is it unlikley?

Because Bosch makes a Duraterm, not a DuoTherm. Duotherm is the furnace company.
I took the OP at his word. Qwerty is more skeptical.

pfffff, we all knew what he meant

charmalu 01-14-2013 10:40 PM

I did too, that is why I didn`t catch the spelling.

man, I spell great, and type even better!
I only have the one car that is still alive, so yes, all on the same car. I will watch it, and see what happens, I have replaced 4 in the last 3 months. Did not track which ones, just seems like a lot, I will watch it from here on out.
Car does run really well for having 400K+ on it.
Thanks
