'83 300d Oil Pressure Gauge Stuck at 3?
Just acquired my '83 300d a couple weeks ago and since there was no documentation of the last oil change, I thought I would err on the side of caution and change the oil / filter.
Prior to the oil change, my pressure gauge would read around "2" when idling, and pin to "3" when giving it gas. So. . . . . I changed the oil and filter, took the car on a 10 minute run, and everything was great. No changes in how the oil pressure gauge was responding, and if anything, the car seemed to be running a bit smoother with new fluids (though likely all in my head). This AM, I fired her up and even at idle the gauge shot immediately to 3. Took a quick spin around the block, stayed at 3 the whole time. Although I'd love to believe I just have great oil pressure, I'm a bit more skeptical than that. . . . Separately, I'm running into the well documented "engine won't turn off with the key" vacuum mystery that until I get my mity-vac in the mail I can't diagnose. The door locks work intermittently; the engine shuts off with key about 40% of the time. . . . two weeks ago when I got the car it was 100% and has been on rapid decline since :-) There shouldn't be any correlation between the vacuum leak and the oil gauge, should there? Any ideas on where to start? I'm a determined novice at this. . . willing to take on challenges, but there's a bit of learning curve involved for me. As always, grateful for any and all help . . . . -Joshua

There is probably a link between the oil change and the shutoff failure. Check the vacuum lines around the oil filter....

oil pressure should be pegged on a cold engine, even at idle. when warm it should drop at idle, but stay above 1 bar. under most driving conditions, it should be pegged. 3 bar is like 45 psi..................... not really too high, so it should be above there.
also I notice that w/ fresh oil, pressure seems to stay higher than on older oil/? I, too, bet you knocked a vac line off when you changed the oil.

The oil gage should peg at "3" until the oil warms up.
I second the vacuum line problem. Lots of lines around the filter area. I'll bet you knocked one off. Jim

hi, any update on your oil pressure issue? I too have the same issue. Oil pressure function normal (idle warm: about 2 bar, and immediately hit 3 bar when i step on gas) before I changed filter and oil. Now it always stays at 3 bar unless I get on the highway driving 55-60 mph, then after i exit to local street it goes down to 1.5/2.5 bar. BUT after driving a bit more on local street and then stop at light it will stay at 3bar. Not sure whats going on but I did not knock any vacuum hose, I rechecked.
I noticed on Factory Service Manual then mentioned Two type oil filter: oil filter Part No. 617 184 00 25 Dimension(hight of filter exposed from bottom to end of metal filter cover) = 40mm Part No. 617 184 01 25 Dimension = 55 mm link: http://www.fgsswitch.com/host/18-005.pdf Could it be I have the wrong filter? I dont believe so but how knows thank you |
