Prop shaft wall thickness?

G'day Folks,

Have any of you industrious types who have been lengthening or shortening prop shafts ever measured the wall thickness before?

I've never cut into one, but I understand it's a double wall pipe...

I have had a custom shaft made (modified stock) and I took a look at it when they cut it apart. The walls are about 1/16" and there is (or was in this case) an inner "pipe" of sorts separated by a rubber tube from the outer wall. I'm assuming this was acting as a damper.

I was able to wiggle the inner pipe ever so slightly when the shaft was apart.

The inner pipe was only in the center and did not extend all the way to the ends.

For a w123? I've got a shaft from a w126 right here on the floor. I'd Be happy to sacrifice it for pics and measurements if that would help.

OK so that's about 1.5mm thick - thanks.

Well that would be fantastic in a way; but I'm not sure if my conscience could take it!

I mean why kill a perfectly good part just because I'm all snowed in and suffering from my usual January boredom again...

...I'm just messing about with some calculations to see if I can work out some vibration related data - I'm not sure at this stage if it will be of any use to anyone. It could be a total waste of time - which is one thing (and my problem) but why waste a good part too?

I've thought of an alternative plan to find out what I wanted to know - I'm not !00% sure if it will work - but please don't go sacrificing good parts just yet!

Ok. With sadness I saw everything but the engine, tranny, shaft, dif and axles off to the scrapper today.

Let me know.. I don't have a 126 anymore so it's no biggie.
