windshield wiper ghost

I don"t know how this could even happen. I haven"t touched my windshield wiper relay, wiper control, or steering column, but now when I adjust the passenger side mirror, the windshield wipers come on???!!! 1984 300cd.

Ghost in the Machine

On my 84 300sd the windshield wipers often take a swipe or
two when I first start the car. It's either 30 year old wiring
talking funny or maybe you're right, it's mysterious messages
from the great Mercedes Netherworld

It's not dangerous or really very annoying so I haven't even tried
to fix it. I think I've had the same thing happen as you with the
passenger mirror.

The electrical gremlin I had that was dangerous was the seat position
memory switch. It would just start moving by itself up--down--pushing
me into the steering wheel. Funny to the people in the car with me, but
I really could have had a wreck. Needless to say, I disabled that feature.

I have the exact same issue with my car. If I move the passenger mirror switch in a certain position, the wipers come on for a few strokes. Sometimes this happens when I start the car or turn the A/C on via the PBU. Some times I want one swipe of the wipers with the switch but I get several. I can usually stop them by cycling the wiper switch a few times. Definitely sounds like a ground issue to me. I plan on checking the electrical wiring on the wiper motor at some point.

Let us know if you figure it out. I'll do the same.

I had an issue a while back where the wipers in my 240 would just decide to wipe randomly, not caused by anything. It turned out that the switch for the wiper on the end of the stalk had some moisture in it. The moisture mixed with the little bit of grease in the switch, and it would make the wipers work automagically. I popped the end cap off the wiper switch and cleaned it out. After that the automagic wipers stopped working automagically.

I can see how moisture would do that. It basically shorts the contacts enough to trip the relay. However, I don't think the switch is the culprit, at least in my case. I replaced the whole stalk shortly after buying the car because the turn signal switch was no-op, but the wiper issue persisted.

I have cleaned every ground point you could imagine except for anything behind the hood cowl. I have not yet ventured in there.

Many systems tie to two common ground points:
G101 (RH Front Fender, behind the headlight)
G102 (Behind center of instrument cluster)

Tom
This may help several of my customers.
After connecting the ground and testing, please post your results.

Thanks

Tom

Did that solve the problem?

Sorry for the late reply:
Since discovering the wiper issue, the battery has died. Need to save up for purchase.
