not particularly a diesel question. but when thinkning of the summer to come,. i think i need to recharge my a/c.. now the part store said i need this and that and will come to about 3-400 bucks.. but could i just recharge it with the newer freon? i have heard somebody say that u could just plug it in, but make sure the old freon is all out first.. any advices would be appreciated.

I did this on a Dodge van I sold a couple of years ago. The block that attached the outside componets to the inside had failed. The part was less than $50.00 but a shop wanted almost $300 for freon to recharge. So seeing I was looking to sell in a few months I figured what the heck. Got the kit with the new fittings and oil. It worked fine and was working when it was sold six months later. However the correct way is to replace the oil dryer, and flush the system of all old oil then evacuate the system before recharging.
