How to find transmission number?
Im about to order a new tranny filter and oil pan gasket, but just before ordering I find out theres two possible models that have different gasket shapes and filters, so I need to get the correct one.
The 722.3 or the 722.4, these are the only two options available for my model according to the parts-store im ordering from. I have a 1985 300TD wagon. Ive looked through all the original owners manuals and maintenance booklets and have found nothing. I read somewhere in this forum I can find the number on the passenger side of the oil pan, but I just came from under the car and didnt find it. The description wasnt more specific than that. could it be determined by my VIN? or is there a likelyhood its one vs the other by the expertise viewing the forum. Any help would be appreciated I need to get to bed at a decent hour happily knowing my parts are on their way.! |

it should definitely be stamped into the metal on the passenger side of the transmission. maybe it was really dirty under there? get a rag and wipe down the area near the pan...

It would be helpful to know as its freezing outside and the car is parked on an icy driveway, and its very dirty under there. The less area I have to wipe off to search the better Thanks! |

So I found it by simply noticing there are two distinct shapes to the oil pans. The 722.3 is what I have. Its a non-California model, apparently.
Much easier than trying to wipe off the layers.. Thanks! |

if you can take a picture of the driveshaft end of the trans, it's pretty easy to tell...
