Removed old broken AC system from my 240

removed the guts of the old AC, the coils in front of the radiator, the presure lines, the compressor and its mounting bracket, etc.......boy is there alot of room to work in there now !! I love it !! and the radiator get to breath now too, with 2 fans and no obstructions, shouldnt ever overheat ;)

:)

I didn't know it was possible to overheat a 240 anyway... solid fan, no clutch, 9 hp... 0-50 time, because the 240 needs a downhill slope to reach 60... and a calender to time it.

hehe.

You live in Florida with no AC? that is as bad as living in Minnisota W/O Heat.

i am used to no ac, i never have cars with it......in Germany many cars do not have it even......anyways with the junk out of the way its wide open spaces under there.....its great..... :D

As long as you're happy.

Also, I don't think it gets too overly hot in Fla - at least near the ocean. The sea has the breezes onto and off the land to mitigate temperature differences AND the gulf stream keeps the temps stable.

Save the parts that are still good, in case you change your mind.

I will also be removing my old, non-functioning ac system from my 240D. My compressor rattles and makes my car sound more like a hooptie than giant singer typewriter.

Plus, who needs an AC up here:P

Well I guess you won't be buying one of my Sanden compressor mount kits!:D

I'll be going through and fixing my whole A/C soon. One A/C-less summer in Arizona with black MBTex interior is plenty :)

post up all the questions you have on AC I'm here!:D

Thanks! I will.

I'm off to a frugal start. Another local 123 owner just did his entire setup over and he gave me his known good compressor, which he replaced with a new one so that he'd have a warranty on his whole system.

His car uses R134a. Anything I should do now with the used compressor to prep it to go back to R12?

It would be my opinion to not install ANY R4 compressor (new or used) in your 'Benz. Especially with the cost of R12. The GM R4 compressors are very unreliable. You could get one that will last a couple years, but also get one that will fail soon after installation. They are just not worth the effort and expense. Best to use a Sanden style compressor, and do the job once. Again, just my opinion...Rich

I have certainly read a lot about that. Given that the compressor is free and like new, I'll probably use it. Your opinion is certainly appreciated, though; that's what this forum is about.

I have been told that the R4 compressors are now made by Bosch and that they are holding up better. That's what was installed on the aforementioned other 123. So maybe the answer to avoid as many issues is to purchase a new, not rebuilt, R4 compressor.

That may be true, but the only NEW R4 compressor that I am aware of comes from Compressorworks in Texas. I am not fond of these, as I got a bad one right out of the box from Autozone. After that, I decided to go with the Sanden. I installed a used ($40 at P-A-P) Sanden in my SD a couple years ago, and it has been working flawlessly ever since. Of course I can't say that about the heater, as it has not worked since I got the car (bad CCU).
Good luck with your used R4, you will need it.

Is this to mount a good compressor that can run R-134 on a 617 engine?
That sounds cool. How much are they? I don't have a car with a 617 but see people who do and this sounds like a better ac option.

Thanks
