Inherited 1993 300D 2.5

Hi all,

First time poster, been reading posts for a couple of months.

Last year my father died and I inherited a 1993 300D with 147,xxx miles. Sat for 5 years before two months ago. I had it towed home, drained the tank, put in 10 gallons of fresh diesel, replaced a blown fuse, new battery, new fuel filters and it fired right up. Nice!

Shook really bad and took it to a reputable indie here in Spartanburg. He replaced shifter bushings, flex disk, one tie rod and both motor mounts. Took out all the shake and runs pretty good. I'm going to clean all the injectors in the immediate future with the ************** cleaning kit as I have have the injector "ping" and it smokes when it cranks.

My question is that the indie said the AC compressor was locked up and to do the job right (replace most of AC components) would be about $1200. Does this sound in the ballpark? I really like the car and want to keep it in homage to my dad.

Any responses would be most appreciated.

Mark

$1200 sounds in the ballpark for an a/c rebuild.

Looks like you're about an hour away from Vstech who knows everything there is about W124's and A/C. I'd contact him first.

Bring it down some time, I'll knock the heck out of that price, and teach you about the vehicle while I'm at it!

If you make the big investment in the AC, be aware of the fact that it's not uncommon for the evaporators on these cars to leak. It's a huge job to replace (and it's certainly not included in your $1200 quote....it's about 16 hours of labor). However, as an alternative you can use a sealant....that's what I did.

What sealant did you use? This seems good to know .

I have also heard about such a sealant and have also got to know that some dealerships used this in W140 and W124 evaporator leaks.

Cryoseal. Not cheap, but worth it in my opinion. http://www.ssrintl.com/

With other leaks, at gsxr's recommendation I've been experimenting with the products from ES Refrigerants.

That figure sounds about right to hire it done at an indy shop. I've hired the job done in years past on a '83 300SD MB, and the bill came to around $900.00 each time at an AC only aftermarket specialty shop. Hopefully, the shop will do a good job for you.

I have no experience with the injectors on these diesels.

Great story inheriting a nice diesel MB from your Dad.
