Help decoding this

Can you guys help me decoding this?

Should this tag match the VIN Number?
It doesn't.

thats just paint codes and option codes. i dont think the VIN is hidden in there anywhere

I don't remember what year the 17 digit VIN numbers started, but I think 1972 might have been the old system. The second row looks like it should at least partially match the VIN, for example, it looks like a 116 with an automatic transmission.

Its an 80, W116, but still has the old system.

should be a late 80 300SD W116

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power
3) Not nearly enough power!! 240D w/auto

Anyone that thinks a 240D is slow drives too fast.
