Not only are the fasteners difficult to access, you then need to manhandle the pump in order to get it to move in either direction. On the 60X, you just calmly rotate the adjuster turnbuckle and the heavens part to the sound of nuclear trumpets. Life's too short for unnecessary aggravations. I don't begrudge anyone who likes their 61X engines, 'cause they're very well built and provide excellent service life. I've just moved on in a different direction.
I've taken my 603 pump off my 606 at least 3 times now and its such a breeze. Lock pump, unbolt... slide out.. Reverse to install..

The fan removal is cake too as long as you have a long 3/8ths and the stubby socket or make a stubby socket.

But on a 617 side of the argument, "you never have to remove a pump from a 617 because they are so durable."

I reserve judgement on 60x engines, their cars, and their owners because I have never driven a 60x. Anybody want to loan me one for a week so I can see what I'm missing?

A 617 owner wouldn't remove their pump as much unless they were doing pump mods.

I remember thinking about re timing my 617's pump and after I read that it requires using a pry bar and large rock I gave that idea up. But man, the 603 pump is really a breeze to remove. I can probably remove one in about 5 minutes if the timing basket was left in place.

First thing that came to mind when I read your question was:
If there is any animosity at all it's -
617 owners might be jealous of 60* power and get-up-and-go.
60* owners might be jealous of 617 durability.

Beyond that, I don't sense any enmity between the two.

Well there is my car is bigger than yours issue to contend with as well. Most 603s are sdls and about fifty feet long.

Well I tend to exagerate a little.. Forty feet sounds better. No wonder they go straight on the highway. When given the choice of the 617 engine or the 603 engine for a boat anchor the 617 is going to win hands down.

I won't loan you one, but if you come visit, I'll let you drive. I never get to ride in the big back seat of my 300SDL.

Of course, there's also the distinct possibility that I will sell you one. With the purchase of the 350SDL, I'm going to have to decide sometime which one to keep --- the 300SDL or the 350SDL. I don't have enough garage/driveway space for both.

When can I expect you?

animosity? nahh. both get me PLENTY of business!!!

I like the 60x because the drive through attendants don't make me shut off the car...
I like the 61x because of the plug solid feel and the sewing machine Klatta!!! ya gots to open the hood on the 60x's to hear any klatta... it's more of a this car platform is better than that platform for me. the SDL is longer and roomier in the back than the SD, the 124 wagon is smoother and a better comfort vehicle than the 123 wagon.

animosity between 60X owners and 61X owners? I have a 617, a 601 and a couple of 603s. I think I hate myself! They are all fun (well, except changing the oil on the '76 300D). I did once drive a 617 with no alternator or water pump belt! Ran hot then but no ill effects afterward. Darn durable engines.

We 617's do tend to get a bit smug about not having to worry about head/vacuum pump/con rod issues until reminded by 603's of our oil cooler lines issue.

Keep in mind that the head issue affects only one 60x engine (603.96x) and the connecting rod issue also affects only one engine (603.97x).

The 601, 602, 604, 605, and 606 have no issues with either cylinder heads or connecting rods.

The vacuum pump grenaded on my old '73 220D with a 615, and I think they're essentially the same pump as found on the early 616/617. I'm convinced that all the diaphragm type pumps are vulnerable to mechanical failure, not just the 60X pumps.

But are stuck (pun intended) with the seizing -ohwhatfun- glowplug plague. Also 604 came with the lovely leaky Lucas injection pumps keeping our (617's) smugness firmly justified and our schadenfreude + fahrvergnügen as rampant as ever.

Of course nothing quite matches the thrill of seeing a recent model S class on a towtruck with the windows halfway down due to computer meltdown.

MB owners seem to be the first to hate on their own, the owners of the older overly engineered ones hate on the new (I bought it just to be trendy) ones. And the owners of new ones, seem to not even acknowledge the older ones at all. and the diesel owners tend to snub their nose at the gas ones. you guys can argue it, but I've seen it a hundred times, not saying every one is like this but it seems to be the trend. Especially when you pull into the dealership.

No title

I had a 603 and a 617 simultaneously and never felt any animosity towards myself.
