Hey now there's nothing wrong with the gasser MB's. Diesels are awesome, but the gas ones can be quite fun. A brisk acceleration in a 617 is nothing compared to an M103 or M116. The sound and forward-movement a M116 makes at 4-6,000rpm is worth every time it needs maintenance. We're split even in my family gas vs. diesel....4 of each currently. And so far, neither has been more or less reliable than the other. My dad has been driving his 420 for 2+ years with less repairs than his 300SD has needed in that time frame....

I guess I don't belong here because I have both. All I can say is that I love both of them. The 500SEL is the finest care I have ever owned, old or new. When the wife and I travel, there is no question which car we will ride in. It will be the 500. Cost per mile is more for the 500 then the 300D but the comfort is worth it. I have driven some 300SDL's but for a trip the 500 beats them all. Local driving, we usually drive the 300D for the economy. Any one that would turn down a nice 500, 420 or 560 just don't know what they are missing.

3rd MB diesel now. Finally got our driveway gasoline free.
Will never own a gasser MB (or gasser anything else if I can manage it). ....although I do own a gasoline powered Briggs and Stratton lawnmower and a weedwacker.

I've owned 20+ something MBs since my first purchase in March, 2007 --- Elegant Madame. In addition, I've bought 2 pickup trucks (non MB, of course) and both of those were diesel or converted to diesel . My ex-wife put diesel in the gasoline lawn mower ---- twice, when we were still married last year. So, I must be a DieselHead, huh? And I would LOVE to have a diesel lawnmower --- but it needs to be something like a 22-30inch walk behind; single cylinder. May I have an official ruling from you, Joe? Thanks,

x2 on pretty much everything here. Except the weedwhacker. Gotta get one of those this spring as my old electric one just gave up on me this winter.

Only have two diesels in the stable.
Yes, I dd just buy a Hybrid (gasser), but only because the only diesel Hybrid available was the S400 which was too far out of my price range. Heck, I'm not opposed to any type of fuel, so long as there is adequate infrastructure to support it. I wanted a battery car, but can't justify owning a vehicle with a range limitation. Shoot, I'll drive a car that runs on farts and potatoes so long as it does so comfortably & efficiently, so long as there are plenty of convenient refueling facilities.

I had a good running 92 Oldsmobile that I got rid of because it had excessive Nitric oxide emissions and I could not troubleshoot that and did not want to pay to have it put on an Analyzer to find out what area might need fixing.
The State gave Me $1200 to get rid of it so I did. So for Me Functionally speaking a Gasser Mercedes has all the disadvantages of a Gasser American or Japanese Car with the Disadvantages that things like Distributor Caps and Plug Wires are more expensive as well as other parts being more expensive. I have one Gasser Van and 2 Diesel Cars. I would prefer to go all Diesel but the Van is Mechanically sound so far. Part of the reason I keep the Van is it has an Automatic Transmission and My Wife can drive that when the Mercedes is down. I like having Vehicles that are free from Emission Checks. If I own another Gasser I am going to try to find one old enough that does not need Emission Checks. S CA is a good area to own a Diesel Car as there is no Cold Weather issues.

My driveway in Texas is 100% diesel for 22 years running. I did own a '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 for a brief time in Omaha, NE. but sold it years ago. What a gashog! About the lawn cutting situation? That is still gasser - Cub Cadet tractor and a Lawnboy. A Kubota diesel lawn tractor would solve that for us. |

Never owned a gasser Mercedes. Although, if the right one came along... I might.

I like having variety in my fleet, keeps things interesting. 4 different engines, 3 different chassis currently.......driving a 190d 2.2 for a few days then switching to a 420 makes it feel like it is rocket powered in comparison.

I'll add myself to the group
So far only ever owned MB diesels, '86 300SDL and my current '87 300TD. Regret having sold the W126 and will eventually get another.
As a big fan of speed gassers are a key component in my life, so I would not rule them out. Two MB gassers that I would love to own at some point: W126 500SEC and a classic '88-89 560SL

What attracted me to my old car was that it is a diesel without a computer. Now that I am appreciating the build quality I may consider a gasoline powered one if it can get the mileage.

I am currently 50/50. I have had a 2006 C230 Sport, and a 1996 C280 Sport. Totaled the '96 and sold the '06 right before the warranty ran out. Currently have 2 diesels: 1971 220D (sadly it's an automatic) and a 1983 240D. My truck is a gasser (obviously not mercedes) but I love it... and when I feel the need for speed, I have a Cadillac XLR rocketship! Though I am currently plagued with a bad head gasket (at 59,000 miles) -- not built like a mercedes for sure!
