79 240D Vacuum Door lock interchangeability?

I just received a replacement door lock actuator from Pelican parts. The original one is shown on the top and the new one on the bottom. The new one looks like it will work, but needs new holes drilled in the door, and the actuator rod will need to be shortened by about 1/2 - 1 inch. Is this the right approach? I searched the forum and could not find an answer. It is not a direct replacement. Any help would be greatly appreciated.[ATTACH]109459

The door actuator rod is held in with a small "C" clip in the center.

The new style has that plastic snap top the closes on the end of the rod. the rod for the newer version looks like it has threads on the end that the plastic grips onto.

You may have to drill a new hole or two for the new style, but will have to source the rod from a newer style door in the yards, (PNP).

The older style was used up through 80 as far as I know. my 80 240D uses them.

The older style are pricy if you can find them. I do have some if you are interested.

So the good thing about the older actuators is that they can be rebuilt. You can take them apart and repair the tares with rubber cemetery and latex glove or something similar orrrr you can order the new rubber. We can all agree msource isn't a great place for parts buttttt he has the rubber pieces for 10.25$ each....one decade I plan to find my leaky one...his part number is VAC-SINGLEDLD

Thanks Charmalu and Kooljjay. That information is very helpful. Since I already have the replacement I will do what Charmalu suggests on the one door, and maybe try Kooljjay's suggestion on the other 2 doors when they go bad.
