I am on board with the HiLux.

4x4 HiLux with 3L 4cyl, 250lb-ft torque at 1400rpm, 5-speed manual, bare bones, would make a great truck.

And then a Audi A6 wagon with the twin-turbo V6 diesel. 479lb-ft!

80 Series Land Cruiser with a diesel. Dammit, now I'm pissed. Why didn't they import it?

got two

The EPA has thoughtfully prevented these terrible vehicles from gracing the roads of the beautiful USA. In western Canada at least the place is lousy with them. On my street alone there are three JDM imports (two of them are mine). One of the most popular minivans here is the Mitsubishi Delica. It is a bit more work to get European vehicles her but still possible. I would like to get an Audi A8 with the 3.3L TDI. or how about one of these MB 400 CDIs

Mercedes-Benz 400 CDI as Saloon in Hamburg

I would like to see smaller diesels here, meaning 3 cyl tdi's in Golfs or atleast much smaller displacement/power. It would be nice to get 3L/100kms in a bigger vehicle with a small engine. My issue with most swaps the vehicle is not worthy of the engine...it will not support the life of the engine so what is point? Along those lines however I would love an all wheel drive station wagon with manual trans or dual clutch with a diesel like a Passat B3-B6 or even better an Audi with longitudinal engine layout like A4 or A6. Sad thing is they exist everywhere but here. VAG products seem to resist our salt use pretty well (13 years in our Jetta tdi and no structural rust 290k miles) so they can last.
A 4matic wagon would also be nice with a modern Mercedes 4 cyl like that of the new GLK or even the ML and R with that engine, the V6 is total overkill for power-I never use the power but pay for it constantly!

Purchase the vehicle to be repowered outside of the rust belt?

Uberwasser....I really like that Audi A6 Wagon with the twin turbo v6 diesel. Do they come with dual turbos from factory? It might be my new dream car, beautiful looking vehicle. I wonder what kinda mpg it gets?

I have a few 617's sitting around and have an older 88' 5 litre mustang that has some front end damage. It has low kilometers and other than the damage, it is a near mint condition car. I have often daydreamed about putting a 617 into the mustang mated to the 5 speed manual, and fixing the damaged front end....but same as you, I don't think that the mustang is worthy of a 617. While initially looking at how to fix the damage to the car several years ago...I came to the conclusion that it is really a p.o.s car with very poor build quality to begin with. For the same reason I have not even bothered to fix it. Just too much work to bring that piece of junk back, not worth the effort.

There was a time I would never say this about my beloved fox bodied mustang (before seeing a w123), but I am afraid it was a cheaply built junky product that Ford put out when they built that car and the only good thing about it is the drivetrain.

I saw one of those on Kijijij last year for real cheap. I actually could'nt believe how cheap it was considering they are sought after with the diesel engine. It did'nt last long. If I had the money I might have went to look at it. It had the steering wheel on the correct side and everything! The downside was going to be rust repair as it had its fair share taking over the body. I think he was asking $1500.00 and it was running/driving!

There is one on kijiji Alberta right now with a Mercedes 617 diesel in it. The guy is asking something like $20 grand for it though (too much without original motor)

Sure does, it's a factory vehicle. Its the top of their wagon line. They also offer 4-cyl and single turbo v6 versions.

The European rating system is very generous. They say it gets 37mpg Hwy. I'm going to guess that 30 is more likely. Still pretty sweet for so much power in a big car.

I intensely dislike my GMC Canyon and would scrap it happily for a 4cyl diesel pickup. I would even buy a mahindra if it were available here.

The gov't utility company my bro works for gave him a brand new one of those to drive. He had nothing but problems with it. Made strange noises engine lights always on and even left him stranded a couple times. 4x4 did'nt work properly....I remember when he was telling me about his p.o.s work truck, thinking that I would be very disappointed if I bought a brand new truck and it left me stranded within a year of its purchase. He was also glad it was'nt his when he went to the dealer to get it fixed...said they were reluctant to stand behind their product and arrogant.. He felt bad that his gov.t utility company bought these cause in a way we all pay for these p.o.s's He wanted to tell his company not to buy junk from them anymore just based on the dealers treatment of it. Not the first or second time I have heard this about these...also heard their 5 cylinder motor was a disaster. He did'nt have the 5 cyl. but it was still crap. What engine do you have in yours?

I have the 4 cyl. Its my second one. They are cheap to buy and good for what I need a a truck for. I will say this: if thats the best GM can do, we shoudnt have bailed them out. But dont expect to work it!

It'd be worth that $1500 for the engine to swap into a gasoline model.

If anyone's looking for a nice 4-runner to do a diesel conversion, my brother might be willing to let go his 94 with a nearly-perfect body. I say 'nearly' because there are a couple tiny dings on the body, and a bit of rust on the rear bumper.
Otherwise, it has beautiful paint, a very clean interior, and the usual 3.0 V6 with blown head-gasket. Still runs & drives for very, very short distance on 5-cylinders.

Happy Motoring, Mark
