I've found that dielectric grease sticks like nothing else, and stays slippery in any temp.

An alternator I would keep rather than accept a $5 core. Even if you don't rebuild it, you can use it for a core, if you need to change the one on your car. Your's might be working but weak (one diode blown), and with a charger can keep driving with it until you get the new one. Some will point out that you can always return the bad one later, but I hate doing 2 trips plus some places like "the rock place" require that you supply the part for rebuilding, on some items.

Also, I would hope to stumble across a rebuild kit (ebay) and try my hand at it. I love having parts on the shelf ready to swap out. Makes me a hero in my family (or at least less despised).

Consumables like filters and non-serviceable parts go directly in the trash. Most other parts are replaced before complete failure and or for preventative maintenance so I keep any serviceable parts on hand for an emergency. I sometimes rebuild spare parts so I have a good unit to replace a bad unit with. Other parts I will store for the sake of research/reverse engineering. Some parts I keep for spare parts; like say an automatic antenna device or unserviceable injectors, etc. I have limited space, so I try to keep only one copy of each unless the part is notoriously problematic, then I may have a small collection of one part.

I am trying to restore my 300SD close to factory release but I also know that I may have it for a long time and just because I replace one part right now, does not mean that in 10 years, I won't be doing it over again.

I also find that I have multiple copies of the same part that I have pulled at the yard but at some point, I have found the part in better condition, so I use the better part now and keep the others for reconditioning later.

I have an old driveaxle with torn boots in my garage. Haven't decided what to do with that. Seems a big too big and heavy to just chuck in the dumpster. So it's just been sitting on the floor waiting for me to trip over it.

I still have the cores from my old 300D as well. My plan was to send them in as cores to CVJ when I replace the axles in my 240D to cut down on downtime.

I put one of the cheap Chinese axles on mine. I figure if it lasts 50,000 miles it'll outlast the rest of the car, at this point. So I don't need the core. I thought about sending it to someone else who needed one, but it must weigh at least 20 pounds, so I doubt it's worth the shipping.

I use my old cores to hold the tarps down on the cars I have under renovation.

Aha! I knew, some how, the problem was that I didn't have enough projects.

I hold on to parts until I get sick of my house and property looking like crap. Then I try to sell them or give them to a good home. If that does not work i scrap them. Hate to scrap usable parts but sometimes you just gotta clean house.
