Warning

Do not trust any of these figures until you have verified your current fuel tank capacity.

Vacuum can partially collapse the tank = reduced capacity.

What is this valve and why is it dripping diesel?

I don`t know about that liter crap, but I do know in 1980 MB went to a 17 gallon tank on the 240D. up to 79 it is a 21 gallon tank.

80 they use a steel tank not sure with the 81 yr, but do know 82 - 83 240 they went to a plastic tank.

Our 85 300D has the 21 gal tank, and is steel.

Besides partially collapsed tanks, a partially clogged strainer can reduce your usable fuel capacity *markedly*. I once had the engine quit from fuel starvation with six gallons still in the tank, in my wagon.

I'm wondering if this might be the problem with my tank. It holds approx 15 gallons when I fill up. That's if I wait until the yellow indicator comes on. Also, my indicator doesn't wag on my wagon like it does on the sedan. If I keep driving the wagon when the indicator comes on, I have very little distance I can drive until she wont go no more; I see that light come on and I'm rubbernecking for a diesel filling station.

I'll check to see if it's partially collapsed or if I have a clogged strainer.

This info posted is from MB and like WHunter says in post #3....do not trust, check to verify the capacity of YOUR fuel tank.

It looks like Charmalu has experience in proving the data incorrect in his case in post #6.

-These members have much more experience with these cars so I would heed their advice. I only posted factory specs on the fuel tanks cause I was in there for other things and have been curious for mileage figuring and thought to post since it would be good reference. Chose a clear direct title for other members search purposes.

Use with the experienced advice in mind. Don't run out of fuel..... checking!

Is it true that the low fuel warning light is set to come on at 5 galons left in the tank?

My wagon has had too numerous sending units swapped in to know what is in there anymore....(w126, w123 sedan?)...but when my old one came on I had maybe 5 minutes tops to get to a fuel station or I was walking. Maybe that setting deteriorates somehow through the other factors WHunter has listed.

I removed the tank that was in our 80 240D and replaced it with one from a 85 300D. there is a definate difference in the sizes.

Later I changed the tank that was in my Bro in Laws 82 240D to a tank from another 85 300D. when I removed the metal panel to expose the tank I was surprised to see it is a plastic tank.

I have a buddy that has a 79 240D, and he said his is a 21 gallon tank. so from what he told me, I figured they are 21 gal in the 240 up to 79. now maybe someone swapped in the 21 gallon before his ownership.

I`ll start pulling panels off the next 240`s I see in the yards, 77 - 79 to see what size is behind there and add to this thread.

I measured the sending unit from the 17 gal tank and it is 14" long.measuring from under the nut that sits on the tank down to the end. this is out of the plastic tank.
