1984 300D--transmission this time
Hi All,
Well last week I was on here asking about my son's engine power being non-existent. (It turns out that the turbo was "clogged" with the O-ring that seals the U-tube). Thanks again for all the help. Now we have a new problem. Under normal circumstances, the transmission will shift into any position correctly with the shift linkage, ie. the car has been driven in D and one can then shift to R or any other position and the linkage will properly be put into that position. The problem is that more often than not the linkage will not physically be allowed to go into the P or R position UNTIL the engine is turned off, and then turned on again. Then all is well again. It feels like some sort of mechanical blockage. We checked the plastic bushings on the shift linkage and they look perfect. We found a couple of coins down in the interior's area of the shift linkage and figured that we found the issue. Not so. The fluid is not burnt, the transmission filter only has about 4000 miles on it. I'm guessing that when the pressure is lowered in the transmission to zero by turning off the engine, that the linkage is then freed up to operate through the shift range again. Any ideas are welcome. Tom
