early vs late IP swap ?
rebuilding a 74 240D ,, the IP that came with it .. need to be rebuilt
old air governer type .. so i was going to use a IP from a 97 240D i see a few things i have to change .. but other than that it should work .. right ? its a lot bigger .. and touches the block in a few spots .. also need to work up a way to get oil to it .. prob easyest way is from the oil gauge fitting ?

Getting oil in it and out of it is the most difficult.
Linkage needs to change and air flap needs to go. |

I don't know when the started but I believe the Newer IPs are lubricated by the Oil From the Engine; meaning that Oil goes in and through them and runs out of the IP and back into the engine.

The newer IPs also lack the Air Vent that is on the IPs that have their own Oil Sump.

If you look in the W123 FSM chapter 07-010 (non turbo section) you'll see loads of information about the differences between the OM615 and OM616 IPs.
Essentially to fit the later pump you need to modify / replace the intermediate shaft so that engine oil can be fed and drained from the IP. The early IPs had their own separate sumps. Here's an epic thread on the possibilities => http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/306080-high-idle-white-smoke-shifting-funny-help-75-240d.html I hope the videos are still available - they were funny.

The MRSF pumps are fed through an oil channel in the intermediate shaft, but the MW pumps have an oil line on the outside.

Sorry yes for the MW pump it is slightly different - but the out flow goes through the intermediate shaft doesn't it? Doesn't that mean that the intermediate shaft would be different to allow for this drainage? I haven't checked EPC on this but I would imagine that the intermediate shafts for M pump and MW pump would be different - wouldn't they? (Just a gut feeling)

The outflow is around the shaft of the pump:
The slit at the top left is the return flow opening. The intermediate shaft of an MRSF pump must be different from the MW and M pump shafts. There is some info in the FSM about it. |
