fuel injector divots

This may sound very odd but over the past weekend while I was cleaning up my garage I finally got around to cleaning my old stock injectors from my 240D to put them in storage and noticed that they looked like they had worn divots in the injector head around the nozzle. Is this normal and if not what could be causing this? I noticed it on all 4 injectors. These injectors only have about 136k miles on them and I know that is correct.

I can't tell from your pictures but if the Metal is burned away and the burned part extends to the hole where the tip of the Pintel sticks out it will create a poor spray pattern.

That sort of burning is associated with the Nozzles dribbling due to the seats inside, low Injector opening pressure of the Nozzle being worn or some timing issue.

When you check the Injectors on a Diesel Nozzle/Pop Tester you find out what the Nozzle opening pressure is and you do another test where you slowly bring the pressure up to 200 psi below the opening pressure.
If the inside seating areas are good the pressure will hold and no Fuel will leak out. If not good a drop or drops will form.
I think the Manual has X amount of drops as being OK. But, if it was Me I would replace that Nozzle.
If it is really bad the Fuel will pee out.

When the Fuel drops or dribbles out of the Injector the Fuel lays on the Metal and burns there and errodes the Metal.

Yes it does. I have already replaced the injectors with new to me injectors from greazzer and the car is running much better than with these old ones. My plan is to have these rebuilt with monark nozzles if I can ever find some. I'm glad that these appear to simply be very worn and not a sign of other engine issues.

Hey,

I got NEW Monarks or some incredibly nice used nozzles for sale (non-turbo) if you're interested. I don't think I can honor my 72 hour turn around right now as I got about 9 sets to do this weekend and things are piling up in my garage. I owe a member a ton of pictures but my garage had another mini bomb explode as it would appear, but at least all parts are located and sort of organized. Just need to make floor space and get these injectors out, pictures, and inventory ...So close to being organized and cleaning out for spring ... poop

Every well used injector I have seen has had the divots. It's from heat, pressure and fuel. Fairly normal for it to happen. If you see that the pintle is burnt off, the timing is off or someone ran some kind of "fuel" through the intake. Or ran gasoline through the engine.
