Which oil filter for a 1980 240D?

Pelican Parts has 3 oil filters for a 1980 240D.
Which one is recommended?
The one with 2 seals?
1 seal and a copper ring?
1 seal and a copper ring and a steel ring?

Those are all good filters. You need a copper crush washer for the oil pan plug and a big O ring. You should get the O ring with any filter. You can usually reuse anything at least once if it's not provided so I wouldn't worry about it.

Arrow warning....

And please DON'T ask what kind of oil to use. This forum has more oil threads than there free Carbon chains in a tanker full of UVO (or is it glycerin?).

I bought a bunch of the Hengst Filters about 10 yrs ago along with some other stuff in an order.
I changed the oil and new Filter. we drove from Santa Cruz, Ca. to Salt lake City, Ut and back. about 8 or 900 miles each way. when I did the next oil change and pulled out the filter, I couldn`t believe what I was seeing. the upper metal part had the sides sucked in. never seen this happen before.

So changed the oil and stuck in another Hengst.

I checked it in a few 100 miles just to see, and it to had the same thing with the sides sucked in.
so all the oil evidently was being pulled through the lower section of the filter.

looking closer at another new one, I can see that the metal sides are dimpled in to create some holes. In the manfacturing of these, their machine isn`t doing it`s job, and either is QA in their inspections.

So what I had to do is use a scribe (like an Ice Pick) and push in each little dimple to open it up. time consuming, but it works.

Looking at the Mahle-Knecht and the Mann filters, they have little hole punched into the metal compared to the Dimples of the Hengst.

Dang I guess the picture didn`t post.

I usually now order the Mann filters, and they come with the 2 metal "O" Rings. I don`t know what the steel one if for. I sure have save a bunch of them.

Cool. Mann it'll be.
Making my list on the Pelican Parts website.

For oil, I've always used Rotella 15-40 in my diesels.
Probably just a "it's what my dad used" thing, but it's always done me well.

It's not suppose to be black when you pour it in; amber is more like it.

Graydon has a good idea about oil --- Rotella.

If that is the case you don't need to change the Oil as it is already Black.

Does His year and Model need the Two 6mmIDx10mmODx2mmW O-rings that for the bottom of the Oil Filter Stem?
