alternative to high priced fuel filters

I have got alot of help from the folks on this forum and I would like to offer a sneaky way to stop buying those ridiculously priced secondary fuel filters from mahle, wix ect for 13 to 17 bucks each and if you run any type of alt fuel like me, you are replacing them all the time anyway. Have you ever taken one apart? they have a little pleated filter that is about the size of a c - cell battery...... very restrictive , and very expensive. I have made a little adaptor that allows me to use a fram 2870a oil filter that is 3 times the size and 1/3 the cost, they are 3.77 at wally world and probably filters finer that those fuel filter because its an oil filter.
I took one of these..... oh well this forum wont allow me to upload pics (which pretty much tell the story) which is strange because I uploaded pics for my last post exactly the same way. I guess I will try later. In essence there is a gas line part that you get from home depot and then tap it to a 14mm x 1.5mm which you can get the tap from vendors on ebay for about 6 bucks for 2. Then you cut this part off and the screw that you tighten on the fuel filter will thread onto this and you tighten it down now the fram 2870a will spin on just like an oil filter, dosent leak because it is about the same od, but it is much longer so it flows alot better and lasts alot longer. Yep if I can contribute to a little payback for these companies overcharging us for so long, I am happy about that

OK here

You're paying way too much for your filters. I pay $7 for Hengst. They love WVO!

They're $6-7 and the inline ones are half that. One of the biggest functions of that spin-on filter is to act as a water separator. Better be sure that filter acts the same way or else your IP is not going to be very happy about it (though I imagine it would, by collecting on the bottom). I would also be concerned about the filtration ratings for each - the stock one may be more restrictive because it filters out a lot finer gunk.

The "part details" on Wix's site for their equivalent to the Fram PH2870A, Wix PN 51342, says 21 micron filtering and 16psi bypass valve.

The actual Wix fuel filter for our engines is PN 33149, with a 10 micron rating, and of course no bypass valve.

I'll continue buying the spendy filters.

I use the hengst or Mahle filters.....on diesel they easily last about 20,000 miles around here....I've never paid more than $7-8 for one.

Not a fan of Fram or Wix products....nor would I ever use an oil grade filter to clean the fuel going into my injection pump

A loooong time ago, when this site had a different name, there was a long thread on here about oil filters. Everyone was cutting them open and posting what they found inside, some of them had some real crap inside, like chunks of steel wool scrubbing pads and organic crap. If I recall Fram did not score so well.

Ever since that thread I have never used a Fram filter of any kind to filter anything.

Not only that Bob The Oil Guy has it that some of the Bypass Valves in Oil Filter actually leak a little. Meaining in this case unfilter Fuel is passing through the Filter.

If the Filter is on the Suction Side I don't think the Bypass Valve would open but if the Filter is on the Pressure side when the Filter gets plugged there is a chance for the Bypass Valve to upen and deliver totally unfilter Fuel.

At 21 Mircons it could replace the Plastic Primery Filter but not the Secondary Spin-on Filter at 10 Microns.

Fram filters do NOT like WVO. They have a paper element and go south in less than 250 miles. I wouldn't use one with Diesel either. Junk.
There are just some things that are not worth cutting corners on. Unless you like swapping filters on the side of the Highway.

The Fram CH2930 diesel engine oil filter (mfg in Turkey and sold in a Fram box) is actually one of the best models available. It's one of the very few that doesn't have cotton gin floor sweepings in the bypass section.

But Fram spin-on filters are generally not in the same league with the likes of Wix or Purolator. The Purolator L43056 diesel oil filter, however, is usually an import of poor quality.
