Diesel Fuel Tank, Phosphoric Acid -Metal Experts?
My tank (75 300d w115) needs to be flushed and I am torn between a citric acid etch or phosphoric acid etch after degreasing. My question is - the phosphoric acid leaves a chemical coating by converting the rust to black ferric phosphate. Can I just stop here and leave this coating in place and fill tank after rinsing and drying? I am a little leery of coatings . . . . thanks!

You have to get it clean first. It may be fine once you do. There is a rust proof barrier applied to the steel that gas tank fabricators use. It is not just bare steel.
In north america it is called tern steel. Probably named after the mill that produces it. Steel coated with lead on each side prior to fabrication. That coating has to be breached to form real rust in a tank. |

Thanks Barry, good to know! This thread might be quite helpful as our cars are getting old!
