Alternatives to Stock Oil Cooler for OM617

My OM617 I am using did not come with the oil cooler and I can not find one for a reasonable price.

So I bought a large transmission cooler. I then cut the MB oil cooler lines right after they transition to rubber hoses coming from the oil filter housing. I then used brass hose adapter unions and hose clamps to adapt to the transmission cooler hoses going to the cooler.

Is there any reason this wouldnt work? Transmission coolers see about the same pressure as an oil cooler right? I still have to finish my exhaust before i can start it.

Hmm

Depending on geographic location it may not be needed.

You will be OK, as long as it is assembled with ferrule, face seal or compression fitting = NOT barb and worm clamp.

That might work but if you are using the smaller diameter transmission cooler lines you might get a blockage of cold sludgy oil - depending on how cold it is where you are. My point being that the stock oil cooler lines are about twice the diameter of the transmission lines.

The oil pressure in these engines is around 100lbs psi.

Diesel911 posted a picture of his engine and showed 97lbs.

In the Manual the Max Possible Engine Oil Pressure is supposed to be 110 psi because that is when the Pressure Relief Valve in the Oil Pump will open up.
As stated in the other Post when I checked mine the Max I got was 97 psi.

What I have always wondered about is that the Stock Transmission Cooler can only cool as low as the Cars Radiator and Thermostat combo. Yet people say cooler is better. My question is in the Winter is cooler better.
If your Trans Cooler is an add on Air Cooled one is there any detrement to that during the Winter where the Engine Coolant temp would be higher than the Air Temp?

I ussally reroute all my cars to a 10,000 pound external trans cooler. The transcoolers can rot inside the radiator and cause coolant in the transmission.Had this happen once,my w140 is bad for it too.

So the issues would then be with the smaller diameter transmission cooler line and the worm clamps I used?? It sounds like I may as well just order an oil cooler with lines

You can get a used MB Oil Cooler at a PNP for around $10. new they are around $400. new Oil Lines $65 - $100 a piece.

Or braze on some threaded "AN" type fittings to the metal pipe, and have a Hyd Hose Shop make you up some hoses.
