Idle adjustment knob tightening tool
Does anybody know the name of the tool needed to tighten the "nut" on the dash mounted 240D idle adjustment knob? I've tried needle nose pliers, but you never really get it tight enough, and then it gets loose and the knob is useless. I finally got mine to work, but would like to get that thing tightened down.

I believe I know what you're referring to, but I don't know the proper name for this wrench. It is easy enough to make a decent substitute. You don't want to get those nuts too tight, though--just tight enough. Might want to use a small drop of blue threadlock.

I have used a slot screwdriver on one side and twisted, the chrome collar comes right off.
you might be able to use a pair of Vice Grips (or pliers) and a rag over the collar, and gently squeeze down w/o snapping the VG together and it should unscrew. Charlie

Can't you pull off the knob tighten the nut and refit the knob?
(I think the fast idle on my N/A 300D was like that - or am I in a dream????)

when I removed mine, I just cut a scrap piece of iron bar off, and used a bench grinder to narrow down one edge of it enough to fit the slot, kind of like a giant screwdriver tip. grabbed the "tool" with visegrip pliers and Bob's your uncle.
of course, I understand that not everyone has cutoff saws and bench grinders laying about, but I'm certain most of us can improvise.

Yeah the plastic knob just pills off, it is the nut in question. It doesn`t have a square side to put a wrench to. the sides slope. KAdams4458 you have a good solution to the fix. I was thiinking of a wide slot screwriver to grind the same way, don`t think one is made that wide though. maybe a Wood Chisle could be ground flat and a slot ground in, then you would have a fancy handled tool that would be used once in a Blue Moon. A cheap Chinese wood chisel would be perfect. They are certainly no good on wood to begin with, so it sounds like a winning idea to me. That's the kind of thing I would look for in a .99 cent bin.
Speaking of giant screwdrivers, I just remembered that about ten years ago Horror Fraught (Harbor Freight) used to carry a common tip screw driver with a one inch wide tip. Honestly that would have worked, but seeing as it was about three and a half feet long, it may have been a bit awkward for this purpose. I never could figure out what good a jumbo screwdriver would have been, but maybe now I know. Too bad they didn't sell a stubby version alongside it.
