Jack stands are cheap.

Or, since you don't need to remove the wheels, some scrap lumber (under the tires) should work.

MB recommends CV joint grease in that area - approximately 5 grams. Its the same stuff they recommend to slather on the splines before tightening the nut and slipping the little bootie on the driveshaft.

It looks like N. Birmingham truck and auto has the part, they have a lot of mercedes stuff. Lloyd at Birmingham Benz has been very helpful as well.
I assume this is resolved ??

hmmmm

Wonder if a worn out plastic centering sleeve can cause premature wear of a flex disc. I suspect it will. The 95 E300 with 307k miles has a flex disc that it does not seem to have been on there long at all but it is already showing some small cracks. I'll have to look but I suspect the centering sleeve is gone.

We made it back to Detroit Wednesday at 9am after an all night drive.

It took all day to come up with the part from North Birmingham Auto Parts. They let me loose in the yard and I found the correct disk on a 190e 2.3 car.

There are three flex disks that I came across, 80mm, 75mm, and 70mm from bolt hole to bolt hole center. As my car is a 2.5 non-turbo, it uses the 70mm found on 190's.

I wish I had just done the repair myself, however the guys at Birmingham Benz are great, and let me in the shop to look over the rest of the car while it was on the lift. They stuck me for $150, but it's all good considering that I tied up their lift for half a day while we were hunting the part. Also, this is the first time in 5 years I have paid a shop for anything other than an alignment, so I'll just deal with it.

All in all, it was a nice break down as break downs go...No tow trucks, met some new people, and got to check out Birmingham.

Thanks to you all for all your help and advice.

In retrospect, I would suggest replacing both flex disks when the front starts to go bad. They guy I got this car from did the front last year, and I checked them both before the trip, however, I recently added a trailer hitch to the car, which I am sure is to blame for the sudden failure of this flex disk.

All in all my 2500 mile, Detroit to New Orleans road trip was a great success. I had enough biodiesel for most of the trip, only had to buy 2 tanks of fuel, and had no fuel system or filter issues at all. This car is new to me, and with any 250k+ 26 year old car, you gonna have to iron some things out.

Glad to hear you got it worked out. It hurts to pay someone to work on your car, but when you're on the road and need it fixed NOW that is always a good reason to shell out the dough.

Yeah, $150 is a bargain considering the shop time you tied up. I'd call that good service.
