87 300TD front end rebuild

OK, Jay_Bob's white wagon was doing the squeek squeek dance, so he ordered up the parts for the ball joints, and the LCA bushings and we tore into it last night.

about 3mm play in the driver's ball joint, the bushings were shredded on the outside, but not bad otherwise, we pulled them anyway.

pressing them in is a pain, but a bit of experimenting and it was done.

WHY DOES MB WRAP THE ROTOR SHIELD AROUND THE BALL JOINT???

pics to follow.

My google phone is giving me fits. it won't let me upload to the picasa site... pics are forthcoming.

one of his control arms had been rebuilt previously, but it had febi parts in it, so we went ahead and installed the OE TRW parts. if I'd have had another control arm handy, I'd have swapped him, and kept his for use on another car... oh well.

we cut the flared tube off each bushing, and whacked them out. used a screwdriver and hammer at first, then switched to an air chisel for the last set.
I need either an arbor press or a larger vise to work with the control arms. mine JUST wouldn't open enough to fit the bushings in... so I modified a ball joint press, and used it with a hammer... it worked.

pics.

notice how much rust there is on the joint.
also notice how much space there is from the ball to the clip between the two...
I took a video, but it's too erratic to tell much from.

Update

I think I did not fully dry out and warm up until sometime Friday afternoon...It was the nastiest, rainiest, coldest day one could imagine to attempt this sort of endeavor while outside.

Car is driving great now, no more squeaking.

Thanks again John for all the help and we'll hit part 2 (flex disks and carrier bearing) soon. I will definitely check the weather first!

I feel your guys pain. I've been doing my entire front end for about a week now. I keep finding bad parts and tools that I need to finish the job properly. It hasn't been cold and the rain held off, but my 3 year old son sneezed on me and got me sick for the whole process. Somebody's pit bull got out and scared the crap out of me. I was wrenching away and just felt something staring at me. When I looked up I was looking into the eyes of a pit. It turned out to be a nice one though. I had lots of people stop and look at the car while I was working on it asking all kinds of questions about it. Then a "mechanic" walked by and told me I made a mistake buying this car because they are the hardest cars in the world to work on. I told this is the first car I ever worked on so I have no comparison, but I didn't think it was that bad. He got upset and walked away. I need a garage so people will leave me alone. I couldn't use the c-clamp press I rented. I took my steering knuckles and new ball joints to sears and they pressed them in for 37.50.
