Yep, brake cleaner in the inlet manifold.

But ........ that reminds me of one thing, we removed the L-shaped hose, from the top of the tappet cover to the inlet manifold, the one whose diameter is the size of a euro or so, and the turn over was remarkably different, as if the timing was backwards or something.

I was surprised that one little hose could make that much difference, we attached it again, things went back to normal, and I forgot about it. I've got no idea if that's somewhat normal behaviour, and I'm not sure if my fellow redneck had already sprayed in brake cleaner at that point.

Don't put brake cleaner into engine, burning brake cleaner can produce very bad things... put carburettor cleaner or anything really but brake cleaner :eek:

I was thinking that it might not even help with a compression ignition engine - I can imagine it would encourage a spark ignition engine though. I thought the point of spraying WD40 into an diesel's inlet manifold was that it comes out in a nice mist (of oil)...

How clean are your "clear" lines running from the IP round to the secondary filter etc? Have you seen an evidence of air in there?

...... next step is the tow start, the compression tester is arriving with the tow rope.

No clear lines yet, that's for when the tow start doesn't work.

Couple of plot thickeners >>> the inline filter is by the engine is only half full, but it's always been that way.

The injectors seemed to be missing their seating rings, normally they blow out when you turn over the engine while the injectors are out and get themselves lost, either they have been squeezed in so tight that they won't budge, or they are missing. I should have taken a photo.

The injector heat shields should be replaced every time you remove and replace the injectors - these are a fit only once part.

If you don't fit new ones then the chances of a good seal is somewhat diminished...

Indeed, it looked like they were there, normally I remove them by hand before turning the motor over, because they fly into the air. I even sliced a bit out of the side of a screwdriver to try and remove one, no budge.

I can't remember what the hole should look like without a shield in it though, does it look similar to a shield ? as in with a circular "step", or is it just a concave surface with a hole ? I'm guessing the second option.

... and she's running, started VERY easily with a tow start.

( yes, battery and start motor are fully functioning )

Current theory as to what the problem was is that there are some centrifugal weights in the injection pump that get stuck and will only free up with a tow start. :confused:

Fingers crossed that she starts when cold tomorrow morning.

Did you try to start it normally before the tow?

I am not an authority on IPs, but as I recall those weights are part of the governor. I was not aware that a governor issue could cause a no-start.

I will be interested to see how it behaves after it sits and cools down for 6-7 hours.

Don't get me wrong, I am very happy for you that it's come to life, but we haven't learned anything conclusive yet as to the problem, have we? :D

Only about 326 times ......

...... before the tow we asserted that there was some unburnt diesel smoke coming out of the exhaust when trying to start it.

... yep, with exactly 15 seconds glow time. ( key goes straight to a relay )

Thinking it may have been an air lock, or just the car being emotional because it needed it's valves adjusted.

What's the ambient temp there when you are doing all this, by the way?

Beat me to it, Yes loosen all metal injector lines going to the injectors, and verify that all are getting wet when you crank. The tiniest amount of air in a fuel line going to an injector will keep that injector from popping and delivering fuel to the engine.
