Which calipers do I have?

I'm ordering brake pads for my 1980 240D. Which calipers where they using in 1980? ATE? Bendix? I'm at work and my car is in the lot a couple blocks away.

I couldn't tell you. I just went to advance and said that I needed brake pads for that car (pointed to it) 85 mercedes 300d and they gave them to me and they fit. Should work the same for you as long as the calipers are original I'd think.

You could have either Bendix or ATE calipers and pads do not interchange.

There is no way to tell by year, not consistently anyway, especially when the car is that old (some cars that came with Bendix originally got switched to ATE later as ATE calipers are much cheaper and generally easier to locate).

You have to check the car.

I think they do interchange on pads.

Having at one time purchased a 240d that I discovered had one of each brand of caliper up front... I would disagree

I also have an '85 and it works for us as Mercedes only used Bendix on the fronts for that model year.

The OP has an '80 and in that year it could be either.

Don't know about the 240 but pads interchange on a 126. Replace the hoses unless yours are pristine. Wear sensors are ~ $2 each. The 126 uses 4 in the front. See what yours uses and replace or not at your discretion - after examining.

I just checked the part numbers here on the pelican parts system and find that the ATE use a 15mm thick pad and the Bendix uses a 17mm pad, That is thickness. Now I have never known there is a difference but apparently they are the same surface area and the Ate pad will work in the bendix but not vice versa. So they will interchange one way but not the other.

I cannot remember ever being asked for the brand of caliper before. is it possible they did not previously offer two thicknesses?

There have been complaints on this forum about brake pads being too thick. Maybe those were Bendix pads being installed in ATE calipers.

Looking at a major discount parts website, most pads are advertised to fit both ATE and Bendix calipers. Also, there is currently a $30 rebate available on Wagner Thermoquiet pads. That makes them almost free if you buy them at a good discount.

I should have looked while I was under there in the rain yesterday. Taking center-stage, my down pipe broke on the way home and I had to carry my exhaust almost a mile so it wouldn't be stolen by scrappers.

Thanks for the advice, I will check BOTH calipers before placing an order. I'd intended to replace the wear sensors since they're so inexpensive.

I located a new down pipe but I'll have to drive the Heckflosse out there to get it, in the rain. Grr.

This is a common issue.
I keep the front ATE pads in stock because they fit both calipers + the Bendix are not as common.
