Need a judgement call - 1987 300SDL 141K

There's a guy down the road, whos got a 1987 SDL for sale. It was his project car, and its a bit of a Franken-car; I'm interested in it bc. I have a 86 300SDL w/ 263K. My engine is solid but seriously gunged up by the WVO loving hippie who owned it before me. His engine was rebuilt *by him* my tranny is telling me its going to die soon. His is just as old but has a lot less miles.

Should I buy it for $700.00 as a "strategic parts reserve"

or behind door # 2

Swap my pristene interior out of my car and into his frankencar, and call it a day?

I think I would. Parts are hard and expensive to come by.

Yes and odldly enough with an SDL its good insurance. Any replacement part that I have purchased for future use assures me the original part will never fail.

Definitely. Remember the Law of Old MB

A part will break only when there is not a spare readily available

You'll never need it... but if you don't have it, your car will always be broke.

There should be no question about it. The answer is yes. You cannot beat having a parts car ready and waiting.

depends

I'd buy it in a heartbeat for $700; might not even offer less. I'd probably start making his car the car to keep.......based upon your WVO engine and tranny condition.

If you have the capacity to store the vehicle and not raise the ire of your neighbors then do it. As others have said when spares are readily available parts do not break.

I've been running crappy URO front stabilizer link rods for quite a while now and they won't break...why? Because there's a new set in bags waiting in the wings...lol.

I've also found that some problems cure themselves when the spare enters the garage.

SDL owners are drooling. U better act fast!

I too, concur that having spares in inventory is great insurance against parts failing. This phenomenon has never been fully explained and slim chance it ever will. This also extends to parts you know you possess, but cannot locate. Talk about frustration. Needs me more space.

Even at asking price, simply foolish not to grab it. Worry about the rest at your leisure. Even if it wasn't possible to keep on the property you reside, the minimal effort to solve that issue will be rewarded time and again. Do it already. You'll thank yourself.

If you don't want it send me a PM and we'll hammer out shipping details for its trip west.

If you can get it for $500.00, THAT would be a buy.

I'm looking into doing the same but my parts car is clear across the country. Factor in transportation costs and the price almost doubles. I would say grab something local if you can and if it has what you need.

Check it for rust, etc first.
