My 1980 240D "What's This?" thread

Ok, lots of questions. Here goes:
I have a 1980 240D I just picked up & it looks like it might have some frankenstein parts under the hood (newer motor? EGR?)

I'll post pics w/ questions:
1) Under the hood:

Just giving a starting point.

2) If this is a 1980, I understand it's not supposed to have an EGR.
Is this an EGR?

If it is, it's definitely unhooked & vacuum lines plugged

3) What's this thing (just in front of the air cleaner, circular thing)?

It appears to hook up to the EGR. It has what looks like an oil return line going down to the crankcase (which is leaking--not bad, but it's an oily mess down there)

4) What's this thing? (just to the right of the temperature sensor?)

5) What's this thing? (black canister mounted to F/R fender).

Has a vacuum line (unhooked) and has a throttle cable that goes out of it up to the throttle. Also some electronics look to come out of it and some other things. Reminds me of a cruise control on my 85 300SD but there's no cruise control inside the car.

I'll post more pictures as I have questions about things on this car.
(ps if the pictures are too big, let me know & I'll size them down)

Thanks ahead of time!
Graydon

Yes that's an egr, so probably a newer engine got swapped in at some point. That round thing with the drain going down to the oil pan is an oil separator. That thing to the right of that temperature sensor is some type of vacuum valve that is activated by heat, not sure but I believe it controls something related to the climate control or air conditioner or something. And finally that canister looking thing on the inner driver's side fender with a cable going over to the throttle linkages is for the cruise control and also there should be a fine adjustment knob for it under the instrument cluster I believe, for helping with idle before the engine is warmed up on cold mornings

X2 what the kid said.

That is a replacement engine from a 82 or 83 240D. I bet your intake manifold is full of black goo from when the EGR was working. My BIL has an 82 and what a mess it is.

If it was mine, I would be looking for Air Cleaner, Intake/Ex manifolds, and the plastic pipe from the VC to the Intake manifold from a 1980, and eliminate the stuff on your engine.

You are missing the Cowel drain hose to the left (In picture) of the brake booster.

Cool! So it's got a newer engine (bonus!) but has EGR (sucky). It has cruise (bonus) but no controls to actuate it (sucky). The knob on the dash works though.

I wonder if the tranny came with the newer engine too. It's really, really strong!

Ok, round two.

1) What do these vacuum lines go to?

2) What's this plugged off vacuum line go to?

pics....

Hey Graydon ---

Can you give us a bigger pic of the outside of the car? Is that Light Ivory? And what color/condition is the interior?
EDIT: Saw your exterior pics in your other thread. So, is that Light Ivory? Looks like you have Palomino interior.

And I'll let one of the vacuum experts answer your question. Althought I think the green vacuum line goes to the vacuum reservoir that is between the fuel tank and the shelf behind the back seat. Hmmm....looked at the pic again. I think the green one that is in the splitter is the one that goes to the vacuum reservoir. And the 2 yellow ones are for the locks. You will be going to Harbor Freight soon to get a vacuum thingy gauge.

Thanks,

Does the Cowel drain hose go where I drew the red circle?

the green line goes to the climate control pods.
the yellow lines go to the door/trunk/fuel door locks.
the plugged off line on that white 3/2 valve is supposed to be plugged like that.

if that cruise control is connected, get rid of it. my friend had that in her 240D and the damn thing caused a stuck wide open throttle on the streets of san francisco.

Yes. there are 2 of them. this one, and the other over by the battery. Most times one it red and one is black, but have seen two black one`s. there is a right and a left, can`t reverse them by the way they are curved.

I have pulled a few of them to have for that just incase moment. It is hard to find good ones, most are cracked and dry.

Cool. Thanks for the heads up on the vacuum lines.
Tonight was removing the driver door panel & looking at the manual window regulator (which is shot). Boy, that's gonna be fun....any recommendations on brands for regulators?

Manual regulators are tough to find. What's wrong with yours? You might need to post a pic of it. I happen to have two; a front drivers and a front passenger.

Not sure. It clunks and the window doesn't go up or down (well, the window KIND OF goes up, but with help...and then just falls again). I didn't have a chance to pull it all the way out tonight (got dark & I needed to get the window back up (been raining here almost nightly).

I'm thinking of getting a new one.
