Transmission swap compatibility 722.321 and 722.317

I have an 86 300 SDL. The tranny leaks like a stuck pig from what looks like the B2 Piston, but its hard to tell. THIS is the car I want to bring up to proper form for the long haul.

I found an SDL in a pick&pull that still had the turbo and tranny, but someone got the head & IP....bummer.

The tranny looks good...a little filthy, but I'll clean her up... but I have no history for it.

I just found an 87 300TD (W124) in pretty darn good shape, except it has a #14 head and exhaust leaking into coolant....gonna pull the head to see if MAYBE its only a gasket failure. I got it for a song...the turbo and IP pump are worth more than I paid.

The 87 tranny is a relatively fresh rebuild.

I know MB puts a different part number on damn near every tranny. Does a different part number mean there must be different ratios and/or modulators?

The engines on these cars are a straight swap.

Does ANYONE have any resource that can tell me what, if any differences exist between the 86/87 SDL tranny (722.321) and the 87 300D/TD tranny (722.317) ?

I have seen/heard that the speedo pickup is electronic on the .321/W126 SDL (I know the Speedo is electronic because I've disassembled mine to repair the gears)

Is it really back to mechanical in the newer .317/W124 300td?

I am picturing that the rear housing is really just a shaft and bearing assembly that will easily unbolt from one tranny and bolt into the other.... any tricks of the trade?

THANK YOU in advance!
Joe

yup. it's mechanical cable drive on the 124's and the 201's.

I know on the 123's you cannot convert the electronic to mechanical, due to lack of lube channel. I do not know if the 124's can be reverse converted to the 126 style or not.

however... the B2 piston o-ring is only about 3.00... why not replace the seal?
