Rear end lifts when shifting to reverse
My '85 300d turbo has always done this and I'm not sure if it is normal or not, but whenever I shift into reverse it feels like something grabs the rear end of the car and pulls it up. It's not violent, but very noticable. I haven't seen it from outside the car to see how much it raises. I'll try to measure it unless it's a normal thing.

Some lift is normal as the suspension loads up. An excessive amount of movement can indicate rear mount bushings need to be changed. Both of our cars do it.

Its a normal reaction to torque emphasized by the fully independent rear suspension in a benz.

Yep, they all do it. It depends on the engine idle speed and how "engaged" your transmission is set to be in a no-pedal applied situation. The older diesels tend to do it more than the gas versions or newer vehicles.

Normal characteristic of the rear suspension in these cars, and especially noticeable with an automatic.
When you shift into reverse with the brakes on, the rear axles torque on the trailing arms jacks up the rear. Not an issue once the car moves. Happy Motoring, Mark

Our '08 Toyota Sienna does this also. I can't comment on the Corolla, as it is a standard.

Hmmmm?

If it is a normal reaction for the rear end to lift when you are reversing with the brakes on, could it be a normal reaction for the rear end to squat when you are in drive and apply the brakes sharply? Ha ha, I still owe you a reference or two on that one. I have been too busy to make some scans and post them, but I will get to it eventually. Andrew

Our W123 diesel did the same when new, so I'd venture it's normal, but I'm interested in reading more replies here.
I don't recall my W126 diesel doing it, nor does my W210 diesel do it - the rise and fall deal when shifting into reverse. |

My 350SDL squats when put into drive (from neutral). I believe this is normal....

A new differential mount helped minimize rear end lift (reverse) and rear end squat (forward) on my w123.

ok. cool. Don't recall any vehicle I've ever been in doing that. My friend had a honda that would give you shaken baby syndrome when in reverse, but that's different....I hate hondas and I don't know why.
