what is a standlight?

the driver's side taillight on the w201 was not working last night so I replaced the bulb but it was still out. it was too dark to check the fusebox.

in looking at the fusebox info, the driver's side taillight (stoplight left?) is connected to the 'stand light left'. What is that?

The car is parked at home and I am at work. Even at work, I work on cars. Sick, sick, sick.

Standing Light is a European thing that is present on our American M-Bs.

It is meant for parking alongside the road at night. The lamp closest to the traffic is supposed to be turned on and left on all night. It uses the same bulb filaments as the marker lights (first position to the right on the light switch) but only one side at a time.

The feature only works when the key switch is in 0 or I. That is why it is fused differently than the main marker lamp circuit which works all the time.

It is operated by twisting the light switch knob to the left.

Yes. Standing lights are the parking lights that are light on the exterior of the car only, only on one side, and only with the key off. You'll notice the rear side marker and license plate lights are not illuminated when the standing light is switched on.

You turn them on by turning the headlight switch past off.

On VWs the standing lights are activated with the turn signal stalk, again only when the key is off

I am not convinced that they are supposed to be left on all night.

Since only the front and rear corners on one side are lit the drain is very low. No tag lights nor panel lights in this mode.

The bulbs are 5 W IIRC so 10 W/12 V = 833 mA

833 mA for 10 hr is 8.33 A-h, that will hardly make a dent in the battery's reserve.

Full American style parking lights, you are probably closer to 50 W total, so that would put a hurt on the battery running all night. Say 48 W to make the math easy - 48 W/12 V = 4 A, x 10 hrs is 40 A-h.

All night standing lights

If you've been in Germany and traveled through small towns at night, you will see the standing lights used all night.

For US models, the standing lights use 4W bulbs in front (or the 4W filament on a dual-filament bulb). The rear, in a 190E, uses a 10W side marker bulb (US model) coupled with a 10W tail light bulb.

Euro models do not have a side marker bulb, so the front city light (4W) suffices for that side, as well as the tail light (10W).

For a W123 but the principle applies to the W201

Ok you are going to make me get out the calculator again

14 W/12 V = 1.167 A x 10 hr = 11.167 A-h

Still well within the range of acceptability for standby drain for one night assuming you are going to drive the car a decent amount the next day.

It is called a stand light because the german term is "Standlicht."

Don't you reckon it would be a little inconvenient to get up at 3 am to run out to the street and turn the standing lights off?

Or do you recommend turning them off at midnight and back on at 4:30?

But is it okay for the expansion tank to remain full all night?

It's probably best to check the water level when turning the standing lights off and on.
