That has got to be the epitome of the best combination between diesel and a fun car.

If you made a kit, and somehow I ever became wealthy enough to buy a SL(the 380s and 580s sell for $14k+ here), I'd totally make this conversion happen.

You need to read Mach4's build thread....no kit needed, he explains it all clearly and for the most part it was a bolt together with minor fabrication.

Also, if you're really interested explore the SL market a little closer. I've seen nice examples in the $3-4K range and less with mechanical problems which is what you want anyway if you're doing a diesel repower.

As I was looking at the engine, I did notice that it may be necessary to use the California-version intake manifold/turbocharger setup to clear the inner fender... but then again it seemed like there could be enough room. It makes me wonder if I should pull the California intake manifold from a 300D that's at the wrecking yard in case someone wants to do this conversion to their SL.

If I had to guess, I would say that the younger gentleman is the owner of the SL. I will find out on Saturday for sure if mach4 does not reply sooner.

I think you are right. Youngest of the 3, including the car. The SL is not a spring chicken either. Looking forward to see the SL if he comes along to the Spring CA cruise.

I'm planning on it. Sure hope there are more Northern types that sign up.
