OM601 tapping and shaking concerns/questions
Hey all.
I just started my '84 190D after it sat for a week, and it made a tapping noise until it warmed up to operating temp--drove it about 1 mile before it quit. This has never happened before (only owned it a few months now) It sounded like valve noise coming from the top of the motor. Is this common, or something i need to address soon? Also, at idle I have noticed that the motor shakes a little, perhaps more than it should. I have viewed several videos on youtube etc. of this motor idling, and none seem to be visibly shaking like mine does. It shakes at a very high rate (almost a blur when looking at the motor) Are there any primary causes of this, or common fixes? It can be felt when sitting in the car too.. not obnoxious, but noticeable. Also, seems to change slightly from time to time, not shaking as much occasionally. Any advice or links to threads dealing w/ these issues related to my 2.2 would be greatly appreciated. -Steve |

As it had sat for so long I guess the oil had drained from the oil filter into the sump - it took a longer time than normal for the pump to push the oil through to the valve train. There should be a non return valve stopping this from happening. Perhaps it isn't working properly. You'll have to check on the online manual over on www.startekinfo.com to see where this valve is though - I can't tell you for sure!

You have hydraulic lifters and in engines with lots of miles on them, the lifters sometime seem to drain when left unstarted. I had one that tapped when first started after being parked all winter. It would clear up after a few long drives. Change oil frequently and if it doesnt leak all over, switch to synthetic, which some people report will help.
Shaking can be a symptom of bad motor mounts, there are lots of threads about motor mounts. IF you are new to the engine, check the timing chain stretch-- its not hard and there are lots of threads about that as well. |
