help removing prechamber collar nut

In an attempt to remove a prechamber on my '84 190d 2.2L today I only got as far as the collar nut. I have a tool to remove this as well as the prechamber itself, but it seems as though the collar nut is so stuck on the tool began to rip the metal off the top of the collar nut, expanding the width of the notches. The nut itself has not moved.

I hope its not too late. I'm stopping here until I can gather some advice on how I can remove this collar nut without damaging the head and hopefully, without removing the head...

Thanks in an advance for any advice you can provide :-)

Are you using a commercially made Tool made by a Tool Company or a Mercedes sorc Tool or a Homemade Tool?

I am assuming your Retainer Nut has 2 slots in it for the Tool and is not the Splined ones.

Penetrating Oil soaking for several days before and if it was possible running the Engine to get them hot often helps.

If you cannot do the Above heating the Rings with a Propane Torch and then applying Penetrating Oil helps the Oil wick down into the threads.

If the Head on this Engine is Aluminum the Prechamber Rings are wider (has more threads on it) then the Iron head ones do and Aluminum is sort of more grabby so they don't come out as easy as the ones on the Iron Head. (I have experience with only one Aluminum Head as I helped a Member in My City remove his Prechamber.)

The rings are kind of soft and could be drilled or ground through in the slotted area.

If you happen to nick the Threads in the Head it will not effect the seal because the Prechamber does not seal on the threads.

The same with the top lip if the Prechamber. If you drilled though and slightly marked the upper Prechamber lip it does not seal there.

Here is an alternative grinding/drilling method.

You could drill or grind where I put the red circles preserving the slots for the Tool. The grinding or drilling ought to relieve the tension on the Ring and make it easier to turn if not come apart.

Thanks for the ideas! The tool I'm using is a Mercedes sorc. tool. I think I'm going to source a new collar nut first, and then probably end up drilling or grinding where you suggest.

The tool from Mercedes Source is $150+ and should be fool proof. It should lock in place, in between the grooves. Are you using it right or the grooves/notches were butchered up before you? I do not want to dis-courage you but it is not an easy job now. I would try to cut the notch wider but it has to be 'STRAIGHT' down and use the tool again. The width of the notch does not matter. Assuming the tool is not butchered/rounded also.

You could also contact Mercedes sorc and ask what they recommend. They should stand behind their Tool.

My question is why are you attempting to remove the pre chamber?

$150.00 Yikes. I bought this one from pelican for $78 plus a few other things.
Pelican Parts.com - Threaded Pin Wrench Socket for prechamber in cylinder head

Pulled several from PNP and works great. I have only removed them from the 616/617 and not the 60X engines, so the alum head might make a difference.
from my experience at PNP, it seems after the Injectors were removed, the Lock Ring wasn`t all that tight. though I have seen some pretty tight.

Maybe giving it a quick jerk pull will snap them loose vs a steady pull. maybe that is why the cut out in the ring seems to curl back?

My memory is failing me. I thought at one time I saw it listed at $150+. It is actually listed at $98+ plus shipping and tax. So $150 is not far off. Currently out of stock. I made one myself using a length of gas pipe and the lower half of an injector. It works great to do what I need to do but I only use it once.

Are you going to meet this Sat? I will see you in Lompoc.

I`ll be in Lompoc this Saturday. dang, only have two days to get the car de-bugged, and spiffied up from our trip to Portland.

1778 miles up and back, now what? 400 miles down to Lompoc?

Need some Lock Rings? I`ll throw in some and bring along.
